Lomega’s Whitney Glazier Competes for American Star in Ag Placement at National FFA Convention

Many Oklahomans are involved in this year’s National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, competing in various events. One of those includes Whitney Glazier of the Lomega FFA Chapter.

Glazier is a finalist in the American Star in Agricultural Placement. I had the chance to catch up with Glazier and talk about the competition, as she will know the final standings on Friday evening.

Each year at the National FFA Convention & Expo, four FFA members are honored with American Star Awards for outstanding accomplishments in FFA and agricultural education. The American Star in Agricultural Placement is awarded to the FFA member with the top agricultural placement SAE in the nation.

“When I got started, it was working on the family farm,” Glazier said. “I did that ever since I was little, and it started long before my time in the FFA. It was just natural to keep doing that and to use my work on the family farm to be able to run for proficiency SAEs and eventually the American Star.”

Brady Sidwell Brings Farm-to-Table in Enid, Oklahoma

At the Grown Tour in Enid, Oklahoma last week, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Intern, Maci Carter, had the chance to talk with Brady Sidwell about Enid Brewing Company and Chisholm Trail Milling.

Owned by Sidwell, Enid Brewing Company uses local grain wheat for the barley to brew the beers.

“Since that time, we have added a full farm-to-table restaurant where we have our own local beef, and we are working with local poultry producers, the flour from Chisholm Trail Milling that we are sourcing locally is also used in our bread,” Sidwell said. “We are trying to highlight the whole agriculture supply chain and have it here where people can taste the results of the fruits of the labor of farmers in the area.”

For those who may not be familiar with production agriculture, Sidwell said when they are served local products on their plate or in their glass, it all comes together.

“To be able to do that at a scale- that is really what we are focused on as distribution supply chain and being able to connect those local products to manufacture into ingredients…,” Sidwell said.

INHERIT Select By Zoetis Helps Ranchers Make Selection Decisions Sooner to Identify Future Replacements

In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am back talking with Zoetis Cattle Genetics Specialist, Kevin Milliner, about INHERIT Select.

Zoetis offers a product called INHERIT Select that provides accurate insights on the potential of commercial crossbred replacement heifers in a matter of a few weeks. INHERIT Select is an innovative, multi-breed genomic test and weekly genetic evaluation providing predictions for commercial females, including crosses of eight major breeds.

The test delivers Genomic Expected Progeny Differences (GEPDs) and percentile rankings for 19 traits and five economic indexes, as well as sire and dam parentage verification and breed composition.

Predictions from INHERIT Select provide commercial cow-calf producers with genetic insights to make replacement female selection and breeding decisions.

Milliner says when you start thinking about the various traits you can identify with this product, the potential is outstanding.

The Oklahoma Pork Council, a farmer-led organization, represents the interests of all Oklahoma pig farmers. From large-scale commercial operators to first-time 4-H and FFA exhibitors, we hope every Oklahoman who raises pigs has been positively impacted by our mission.

According to an economic impact study for the National Pork Board:

  1. Oklahoma’s pork industry supports more than 34,000 jobs throughout the various stages of production. That translates to one in 50 Oklahoma jobs, many in rural communities.
  2. Oklahoma hog sales generate over $976 million in annual cash receipts. That means pork serves as Oklahoma’s second largest agriculture enterprise after cattle production.

Supplementation Options when Wheat Pasture is Short

Weekly, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist Paul Beck offers his expertise on the beef cattle industry. This is a part of the weekly series known as the “Cow-Calf Corner.” Today, he talks about supplementation for limited wheat pasture.

Prospects for wheat pasture started off in good shape this fall with many areas getting late summer rains. However, most of the wheat grazing areas did not get adequate rains to push the emergence and growth of wheat pasture for most of the month of September and October. Most of the region got nice rains that will likely drive enough forage production on early planted wheat for grazing by mid-November or early December. Later planted wheat or wheat that had not emerged from earlier plantings will probably be severely delayed even with the latest round of precipitation in October.

What can we do to sustain stocking rates that support at least approaching our normal levels of production?

Setting stocking rates on wheat pasture in the fall and winter has large impacts on performance of growing calves and can have large influences on productivity of pastures during the spring. We have found that the maximum ADG could be expected at 5.0 pounds of forage dry matter per pound of initial calf bodyweight and ADG and if the initial forage allowance is restricted to 2.4 lb forage DM/lb initial calf bodyweight we can still see adequate performance of around 2 lbs/day.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.

The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.

The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.

Cattle Industry Leader Bob Drake sits down and talks with Ron Hays about his lifetime of service in the cattle business. Drake has served as the President of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, the last President of the old National Cattlemen's Association and Vice President of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau.

He loves politics and being a change agent for the cattle producer back up at the fork of the creek. Drake had a front row seat as the Beef Checkoff was approved by cattle producers and he believes it's way past time to find a way to get a second dollar at the national level.
