Tight Supplies and Pause on Cowherd Expansion Supports Higher Prices in the Future

As we continue our coverage from the National Association of Farm Broadcasting this week in Kansas City- Farm Director, KC Sheperd, spoke with Dr. James Mintert about the Ag Economy Barometer. Mintert is a professor and extension economist in the Department of Agricultural Economics and serves as director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture.

The Ag Economy Barometer goes back to the fall of 2015, Mintert said, and is a monthly phone survey of 400 farmers each month. A different 400 farmers are surveyed each month, Mintert added.

“We have got a big database of farmers we tap into, in fact, if you get a call from us, you shouldn’t get a call again for at least a year,” Mintert said.

The demographics are held constant, Mintert said, as the barometer is based on the U.S. Census of Agriculture and the value of farm production.

“On the crop side, we talk to corn, soybean, wheat, and cotton producers, and on the livestock side, we talk to beef, pork, and dairy producers,” Mintert said.

Derrell Peel Predicts More Large Placements in November Cattle on Feed Number

In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist, Derrell Peel, about the recent fluctuation in the cattle markets.

Most of the impacts on the markets, Peel said, are from the futures side.

“Both futures and cash have gone up very sharply for many months, and so from a futures standpoint, you had a lot of long traders sitting on long positions that had a lot of money made on paper,” Peel said.

Peel said he considers what has happened over the last month as a large correction. The October Cattle on Feed report also had an impact, he added.

“The bigger-than-expected placement number kind of took the market by surprise, so we continued running it down,” Peel said. “It does have an impact on cash markets, so we have seen bigger feeder cattle prices come down- the ones that sort of match the feeder futures contract."

Dr. Peel says everything points to at least one more month of large placements versus a year ago- we will be reviewing the report with him once released this afternoon- and we will feature that story in our Monday email

That Cattle on Feed report will be out this afternoon- from DTN- here are the pre report estimates:

November 1 On Feed- Average Estimate- 102.1%

Range of Guesses- 101.4-102.6%

Placements- Average Guess- 107%

Range of Guesses- 102.7-108.1%

Marketings-Average Guess- 98.1%

Range of Guesses 97.2-98.5%

While El Niño is in Full Swing, How Strong it Will Be Has Yet to Be Determined

At the 2023 Oklahoma Ag Expo, Associate Farm Editor, Reagan Calk, had the chance to visit with the Mesonet Agricultural Coordinator, Wes Lee, about the tools the Mesonet has available for producers and an outlook on weather.

While the Oklahoma Mesonet website is a great tool, it is also available as an app through Google Play and in the App Store.

“All of our value-added tools, for the most part, are only on our website,” Lee said. “A release that we made to the website in February of this year made most of the website mobile-friendly where you can access it directly from your phone and not have to go back to the office to look at that.”

For ag tools and value-added tools, Lee said it is best to use the website. The website also features an agriculture tab, which features tools for all different kinds of commodities for producers to utilize.

Farm Bill Extension Praised by Ag Groups

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) praised Congress for passing a government funding package that includes a one-year extension of the 2018 Farm Bill through September 30, 2024, and extends the Livestock Mandatory Reporting program until January 19, 2024.

“NCBA is thankful for Congress passing legislation extending critical programs that farmers and ranchers across the country depend on. These extensions give much needed certainty to cattle producers and NCBA will continue engaging with Congress and the Biden Administration as they work to deliver a long-term Farm Bill, as well as a clean reauthorization of Livestock Mandatory Reporting,” said NCBA President Todd Wilkinson, a South Dakota cattle producer. “With so much work still left to do, I urge President Biden to swiftly sign this continuing resolution.”

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.

The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.

The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.

Cattle Industry Leader Bob Drake sits down and talks with Ron Hays about his lifetime of service in the cattle business. Drake has served as the President of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, the last President of the old National Cattlemen's Association and Vice President of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau.

He loves politics and being a change agent for the cattle producer back up at the fork of the creek. Drake had a front row seat as the Beef Checkoff was approved by cattle producers and he believes it's way past time to find a way to get a second dollar at the national level.
