Unlock the Future of Agriculture: Join the OSU 2024 Rural Economic Outlook Conference

Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Brent Ladd, OSU Assistant Extension Specialist for Agricultural Economics to talk about the 2024 Rural Economic Outlook Conference, slated for Wednesday, October 16, 2024, and held on the Oklahoma State University Campus in the Conoco Phillips Alumni Center.

Each year the event includes a great lineup of speakers including keynote speakers from outside of the OSU campus and also some speakers from within the faculty body.

“This year the two keynote speakers are Randy Daniels, Chief Risk Officer at Triangle Insurance, and Kenny Burdine, Extension Professor of Livestock Economics at the University of Kentucky.”

Daniels will discuss the impact of the agricultural insurance market on the ag industry. Burdine will talk about livestock risk protection insurance for feeder cattle.

A much-anticipated event at the Conference is the rapid-fire panel. “This year Dr. Rodney Jones will do the ag finance update, and Dr. John Michael Riley will provide the grain markets update in place of Dr. Kim Anderson, since he recently retired,” Ladd noted.

Everyone is invited to attend the Rural Economics Conference, but it will be especially geared toward producers, extension personnel, agricultural lenders, and policy makers.

PHD Candidate Alexis Main Explains Her Studies in Animal Welfare at OSU

OSU Grad Student Alexis Main is a California transplant- having come from Modesto, California to finish her undergraduate degree in Animal Sciences at Oklahoma State- and then staying to work on a PHD in Stillwater as well. She’s actually involved in a program has allowed her to go straight to work on a doctorate and is now closing in on that degree.

We caught up with the OSU Grad Student after we judged the DairyMAX Cow to Cone Homemade Ice Cream Contest this past Sunday at the State Fair of Oklahoma.

In today’s Beef Buzz- Alexis tells Oklahoma Farm Report’s Ron Hays about what has led her to this choice of engaging in pursuing a doctorate emphasizing animal welfare. “I interned with the Animal Ag Alliance and did their College Aggies Online program and that really helped me build my passion for advocating for animal agriculture and just sharing information with people- you don’t realize how many people don’t know why we do what we do- what practices we do and the science behind it- and so after that and few classes that I had taken- it just fell into my lap and I really loved it.”

She is a big believer in telling the story of animal agriculture, saying it is important for the industry to be transparent as possible with the consumer- “It’s very important. Especially coming from California, we have seen in Prop 2 and Prop 12 that if consumers don’t understand what they are really voting for- it sounds good but they don’t know the repercussions of that and what the actual impact is.”

John Deere is Launching Autonomous Capabilities for its Tillage Equipment

Back at the John Deere booth at the Farm Progress Tradeshow in Boone, Iowa, our own Maci Carter found Michael Porter, Go-To Market Manager for Large Tractors, Tillage, and Scrapers, and spoke to him about some of John Deere’s new tillage launches, like the MT or minimum till rippers and the CC or Coulter Chisel line up just launched the week before Farm Progress. The conversation also migrated to autonomous technology.

The new MT Series replaces the 2100 Minimum-Till Ripper and is a deep, subsoil, inline ripper that breaks up the compaction layer with minimal surface disruption. “With this new line up, we are excited to be bringing an MT11, or an eleven-shank inline ripper,” Porter detailed. “Previously, with the 2100, we only had out to a nine-shank. This ripper isn’t only a wider implement, but it also brings twice the wear life on all of our standards.”

The CC Series is in answer to customer demand for a coulter chisel. The eleven-shank will fit a small row crop operation or the CC25, with 25 shanks, will fit nicely behind a higher-powered tractor like the new 9RX.

“Both implements have the TruSet Active technology,” Porter explained. “It gives the ability to set it and forget it. That really plays into effect when we talk about the CC series which is also autonomy-ready from the factory. Autonomy-ready means that we are installing all of the harnessing, and any controllers needed for autonomy, including our StarFire Receiver nest. All the customer needs to do is add their StarFire Receiver and hook it to one of our autonomous tractors, and they will have an autonomous tillage solution.”

Grants Available for Climate Smart Sheep Producers

The American Lamb Board (ALB) is looking for 150 sheep producers to participate in its Climate Smart Sheep program.

Producers enrolled in the program will be paid up to $7,000 to develop and implement Climate Smart Sheep management practices and measure and report emissions and life cycle analysis.

Possible Climate Smart practices to be implemented include prescribed grazing, cover crop planting, range planting, tree or shrub enhancement, silvopasture, cross-fencing and brush and pest (weed) management.

Producers accepted into the program will work with a technical assistance provider on environmental enhancements and practices. They will establish operational plans, implement recommended changes and organize farm data necessary to estimate emissions using the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculator developed by Michigan State University and ALB.

Applicants will be expected to establish farm records with the USDA Farm Service Agency, complete a Customer Data Worksheet to facilitate the collection of customer data for business partner records, certify highly erodible land and wetland conservation measures, certify they are not a foreign person, certify they are not receiving funds from other government programs such as EQIP for the same practices on the same land, and agree to share farm data.

Small Business Group Calls on Congress to Act on Trump Tax Cuts

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, released two new impactful reports regarding the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction, which is scheduled to expire at the end of next year. The reports illustrate what will happen to the small business economy if Congress makes the 20% Small Business Deduction permanent or if it fails to act.

The Ernst & Young (EY) macroeconomic analysis, released in conjunction with NFIB, measured the impact on small business of permanently extending the 20% Small Business Deduction. The analysis concluded that small businesses would flourish by making the deduction permanent, creating 1.2 million new jobs each year for the first ten years and 2.4 million annually every year thereafter. It would also result in a $750 billion GDP increase in the small business sector over the first ten years, and a $150 billion increase annually after that. Without an extension, those benefits to small businesses and the broader economy would be lost.

  • Specifically in Oklahoma, the analysis estimates that making the deduction permanent would create 15,000 new jobs each year for the first ten years, and 29,000 annually every year thereafter.

The analysis also found that 33 million small pass-through businesses employ more than 68 million workers in the United States. Of those 33 million small pass-throughs, 25.9 million claimed the deduction in 2021.

Boxed Beef Report for 09/18/2024

OKC West in El Reno had 7,656 head on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

According to USDA Market News- Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers traded 3.00-5.00 higher. Demand good. Steer and heifer calves that were weaned sold fully steady to 4.00 higher. Demand remains good despite the heat and lack of moisture.

Meanwhile- OKC West Manager Bill Barnhart offers these comments from the market's Facebook page- " After a couple weeks of shaky sales the feeder market firmed up this week. Fall is here and calves are now coming to town most of which are of the unweaned variety. Demand is good for front end calves or long weaned ones with shots, not so much for the unweaned or unworked. Our trade area is in much need of rain so stocker operators can get wheat pastures planted. Feeders were higher on most classes this week. Fats traded steady to 1.00 higher last week with no trade reported so far this week."
