OSU’s Rodney Holcomb Highlights Changes in Food Industry Trends

The Oklahoma State University Agricultural Economics Department hosted the Rural Economic Outlook Conference on the OSU campus yesterday. Oklahoma Farm Report’s Maci Carter caught up with OSU Professor Rodney Holcomb who spoke about technology in the food industry.

Holcomb has observed a shift from consumers eating three meals per day, to snacking throughout the day. While it sounds bad, he’s also observed a big swing towards portion control and increased health management goals.

“We see a lot of food products that have come out with cleaner labels; consumers want fewer ingredients,” he said. “They’ve also come out with packaging that highlights the important information that the consumer wants: protein, fat, carbs, vitamins and nutrients, and fiber content. The idea is to give the consumer exactly what they want without bombarding them with too much stimuli.”

To meet these demands Oklahoma companies have begun to find unique ways to stand out while giving consumers what they are looking for. Amelia Creamery, of Nowata, Oklahoma, serves various flavors of French-style yogurt in clay containers that raise no concerns about increasing the volume of landfills. Out of Oklahoma City, KiZE Concepts has redesigned energy bars comprised of no more than six or seven ingredients.

Discover the Benefits of the PRF Protection Program with Dakota Moss

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster Ron Hays caught up with Dakota Moss, Livestock Risk Services President, to discuss the Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF) Protection Program because the time to sign up is now as the opportunity ends on December 1.

The PRF program is a federally subsidized insurance program that protects against yield losses due to low precipitation for grazing and haying land. Click here to see a list of frequently asked questions about the PRF program.

“For that program, I like to sit down with a producer and look at them on a case-by-case basis because there are some areas where it works very well for a producer and some areas where it doesn’t work at all just because of what their climate situation is and how the rains come in that area,” Moss explained.

He explained that the coverage covers acreage in two-month periods with the producer choosing the number of acres, the months, and the amount of coverage they want.

Edmond's Things to Know from the OSU Rural Economic Conference

One of our favorite people within the Division of Ag and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University has to be Dr. Edmond Bonjour. As many of you know- I have had the privilege of working along side of Edmond on the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program since he was named Director of the program several classes ago- most of that time as the Chairman of the Advisory Council to OALP.

One of Edmond's gifts is his ability to summarize meetings and tours that he participates in- and he did a great job of doing just that yesterday at the OSU Rural Economic Conference- here's his take from the event:

"The Rural Economic Outlook Conference at OSU was very informative today. Speakers from Triangle Insurance (Randy Daniels), University of Kentucky (Kenny Burdine), and several from the Agricultural Economics Department at OSU enlightened us. Here are a few highlights. The cost of insurance has increased 50% since 2020. There are only five commercial agricultural insurers in the U.S. There are more dispensaries than gasoline stations in Oklahoma.

"High pressure processing, a non-thermal preservation technique that uses intense pressure to kill microorganisms that spoil food, is being used in milk, fruit juice, and dark cutting beef. The number of cattle is the lowest since the 1950s and 1960s. There are 644 undergraduate and 48 graduate students in the Department of Agricultural Economics. Livestock Risk Protection is important to insure against decreases in livestock selling prices while enabling producers to benefit from an increase in market prices.

"Net farm income has fallen since 2022 ($177,696) and is projected to only be $45,000 in 2024. For grain prices, stay out of the market on report day."

Thanks Edmond!

Paul Beck Offers Advice on Feeding Weaned Calves this Winter

Weekly, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist Paul Beck offers his expertise on the beef cattle industry. This is a part of the weekly series known as the “Cow-Calf Corner.” Today, he offers advice on feeding weaned calves this winter.

With the dry weather we have had for the past few months the prospects of wheat pasture this winter are slim. Calf prices remain fairly strong, but there are indications that feeding calves to heavier weights next spring may have economic advantages.

We had a good hay crop earlier in the summer and the quality of much of the alfalfa hay grown this summer was outstanding. Feeding free-choice hay with a concentrate supplement has the potential to add gain to growing calves without large investment in additional equipment. The number of nutrition program alternatives is virtually unlimited.

We recommend feeding an ionophore to increase gains and efficiency and help with coccidia control. See our OSU Fact Sheet “Feed Additives for Beef Cattle Production” (AFS-3038) for more information on use of ionphores and other feed additives. The supplement could be designed to provide all minerals and an ionophore or a commercial complete mineral could be provided free-choice.

Harnessing Nature’s Power: Pivot Bio’s Microbial Solution for Sustainable Nitrogen Fixation

Oklahoma Farm Report’s Maci Carter met with Keith O’Brien, Senior Director for Application Research and Development at Pivot Bio to discuss their unique nitrogen products.

Pivot Bio’s unique approach uses microbes that pull nitrogen from the atmosphere and grow on the root system of plants, producing ammonia for the plant to use. This method, which does not leach or volatilize, provides an efficient and dependable source of nitrogen, producing up to 40 pounds per acre for corn and 25 pounds for wheat.

“We want to get the microbe in the soil close to the seed,” O’Brien said. “So, it has to be either an in-furrow application or on-seed application. Once the see germinates and develops a root, the microbes colonize the root system and that is when they start utilizing the nitrogen from the atmosphere and living off of the root system in a symbiotic relationship with that plant in producing ammonia.”

Pivot Bio’s products are environmentally sustainable and have no ill-effects on the environment. Seed treatments are very common practices in corn, so using Pivot Bio’s product is user-friendly for the producer.

The company plans to expand into new crops and formulations, with a focus on wheat and corn. “We go up to 40 pounds of nitrogen now, and we are going to see if we can move that to needle even higher,” O’Brien said.

Additional information can be found and products purchased at pivotbio.com, where you can locate a local representative.

New Extension Water Specialist Explores Hydrological Extremes

KJ Jafarzadegan joined Oklahoma State University Extension as a water specialist in July 2024. He also serves as an assistant professor in the OSU Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering.

Jafarzadegan’s background in civil engineering led him to a crossroads early in his academic career when he chose between studying the structure or water aspects of the field. He decided to pursue water and the study of hydrological extremes based on his love of mathematics.

“Water is complicated, a complex phenomenon,” he said. “For example, when we study flooding, we look at the different components of the environment and try to model them mathematically together.”

His OSU research and Extension appointments include characterization, modeling and management of hydrological extremes. He is focused on developing flood and drought forecasting tools to improve the resilience of local communities affected by Mother Nature’s harsh weather events.

Boxed Beef Report for 10/16/2024

OKC West in El Reno had 6,601 head on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

According to USDA Market News- Compared to last week: Feeder steers traded mostly 1.00-3.00 higher, feeder heifers fully mostly 2.00-4.00 higher. Demand good to very good, quality average to attractive. Steer and heifer calves traded 4.00-6.00 higher. Demand good. Fall weather has finally arrived.

Meanwhile- here are some additional comments from OKC West on their Facebook page and the market this week: " Calves are now more plentiful than yearlings as we move into the fall run. The market was stronger again this week on limited receipts of feeder cattle despite the futures correction of the last 2 days. Calves were also higher Tuesday even as dry conditions persist and pasture prospects dwindle. Cattle feeders managed another dollar out of packers last week and will continue to push for more."
