31st Annual Tulsa Farm Show Set to Start This Thursday

The 31st Annual Tulsa Farm Show is set to take place from December 12-14, 2024, at the SageNet Center at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This premier agricultural event will bring together farmers and ranchers from across the region to explore the latest in agricultural technology, ranching equipment, and services. With over 300 exhibitors, including event sponsor Oklahoma Farm Bureau, the Tulsa Farm Show is one of the nation’s largest agricultural exhibitions held under one roof.

Ahead of the show- Oklahoma Farm Report’s Ron Hays talked with Show Manager Scott Guttormson who is on location as equipment is starting to arrive and be set up for the three-day show. Listen to Ron and Scott by clicking on the listen bar above.

Scott Guttormson, Show Manager, says “We are thrilled to celebrate the 31st Annual Tulsa Farm Show this year! This event provides an excellent opportunity for farmers, ranchers, and exhibitors to come together and showcase the newest innovations in agriculture. We are proud to have the continued support of Oklahoma Farm Bureau as our official sponsor.”

Scott tells us that one last minute change is that the horsemanship sessions each day will feature Craig Cameron's son Cole here in 2024. Cole is a rising star in the horse training world and is stepping in for his dad who has some health challenges and can't make Tulsa this year. This will be the 30th year that a Cameron will be teach horsemanship at the Tulsa Farm Show.

Sorghum Checkoff’s Strategic Vision: Building Premium Markets and Sustainable Solutions

Farm Director KC Sheperd visited with National Sorghum Producers Executive Director Norma Ritz Johnson to talk about the current conditions of the sorghum crop in 2024.

“It has not been an easy year for farmers,” she commiserated. “One of the reasons that I love leading the Sorghum Checkoff is because sorghum is a lot like our farmers. It is built for tough times, but it thrives when conditions are good. Sorghum can wait for rain, and that has really been the story this year in terms of the crop.”

Depending on when the crop was planted in the various areas of the nation and when or if moisture finally fell, yields are widely variable.

“We are still pleased that despite some of these tough conditions, we do have some good yields out there to the extent that USDA has kept bumping up our estimated yield.”

Promoting Beef and Education: Andy Bishop’s Vision as Cattleman’s Beef Promotion Board Chairman

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster Ron Hays caught up with Kentucky cattle producer Andy Bishop about why he serves the industry as Chairman of the Cattleman’s Beef Promotion Board.

“For me, it is about the people,” Bishop said. “I enjoy getting out and meeting all of the producers across the country who are passionate about promoting our product and telling that story. That is what has driven me to get to where I am today and to share the beef message with everybody across the country that I can.”

Bishop’s own operation is a small cow-calf facility impressively diversified and run by him, his wife, and their four children. He keeps about sixty mama cows and raises Angus bulls, but has recently added Balancer and Lim-Flex bulls to the list.

“That was primarily because my daughter wants to show cattle,” he said. “We bought a Gelbvieh bull and some Limousins, but we sell mostly registered bulls and some freezer beef off of the farm as well.”

Dr. Derrell Peel Analyzes Beef Exports and Import Summary

Dr. Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist, offers his economic analysis of the beef cattle industry as part of the weekly series known as the “Cow Calf Corner,” published electronically by Dr. Peel, Mark Johnson, and Paul Beck. Today, Dr. Peel summarizes Beef Exports and Imports.

The latest trade data for October continued recent trends in international beef trade. October beef exports were down just 0.3 percent year over year with the year-to-date total for the first ten months of the year down 2.6 percent (Figure 1).  October beef imports were up 35.2 percent year over year in October with a January – October total up 22.5 percent over last year.

Japan has moved back into the top spot as the number one beef export market thus far in 2024, with a ten-month total unchanged from a year ago and a 21.8 percent share of total beef exports. Following closely is South Korea, in second place this year (down from number one last year), with a year-to-date total down 8.8 percent from last year and a 20.5 percent share of total beef exports. The combined China/Hong Kong market is number three, down 7.8 percent year over year thus far in 2024 and holding an 18.7 percent share of the beef export total. Mexico continues to show the strongest growth in major export markets with beef exports up 9.8 percent year over year thus far and an increasing 11.4 percent share. Number five Canada is down 7.2 percent in 2024 with an 8.5 percent share of beef exports. Taiwan is the number six beef export market with a year-to-date total down 2.6 percent and a 6.4 percent beef export share.

Joe Locke Launches Give-A-Ham in Stillwater

On Giving Tuesday this week, Board President Joe Locke set the 2024 Oklahoma Pork Council Give-A-Ham Challenge in motion by hosting a generous community feeding event for students, staff, and others outside the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Student Union in Stillwater.

Joe, who serves as Director of Sow Operations for Tyson’s Pork Group, used his impressive pitmaster skills to cook up 500 Blue & Gold Sausage breakfast biscuits and more than 700 pulled pork sandwiches to grateful OSU cowboys throughout the day. Through his Give-A-Ham Challenge video linked here, Joe also encouraged others to donate pork products within their own communities, including tapping Governor Kevin Stitt and fellow Oklahoma Pork board member Cathy Vaughan to participate.

Thanks in part to helpful volunteers like our OSU Pork Industry Group students and several Oklahoma Pork board members, the Oklahoma Pork Council distributed heartfelt giveaways like branded hand warmers, gloves, hats, bags, and more while sharing pork’s story of generous giving with those who came by for a free meal. A special shout out to VIPs like OSU First Gentleman Darren Shrum and OSU College of Agriculture Dean Jayson Lusk for joining the fun and supporting pork producers!

Between now and Christmas, we encourage all our members to take part in the Give-A-Ham Challenge. Donate a holiday ham to your local food bank, deliver a pork meal to a neighbor, volunteer at a charity you support, or meet another need you see in your community. The “Giving Season” is the perfect time to spread generosity and make a small difference at the local level. Share your participation by posting a photo or video on social media using #GiveAHam and #OKPork, or click here to let us know how you #GiveAHam this December!

OSU Extension Warns Poultry Owners to Know the Signs of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

Animal health specialists with Oklahoma State University Extension caution poultry producers to protect their flocks after Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was confirmed in a commercial operation earlier this month in Adair County.

The HPAI virus is more common during the spring and fall seasons when migratory birds are active. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry has established a control area in Adair and Delaware counties to manage the spread of the infection.

Rosslyn Biggs, OSU Extension veterinarian, said additional testing of commercial and domestic flocks is underway in the surrounding control zone of northeast Oklahoma. Also, a surveillance zone that extends past the immediate control area has been identified to determine if the virus is isolated to one site or active in multiple locations.

“There are also restrictions and quarantines in that control zone of poultry and poultry products to make sure that if we do have it beyond the one premises, we’re not extending it or sending it somewhere else,” Biggs said.

2024 Farm Income Decline Confirmed in USDA Update

USDA’s December 2024 farm income forecast confirms just how tough a year it’s been for American agriculture, with slightly revised projections offering little relief to farmers, who are losing nearly a quarter of their income in two years. Net farm income is now projected at $140.7 billion for 2024, down $6 billion (4.1%) from 2023 and $41.2 billion (22.6%) from the $181.9 billion peak in 2022. While these updated figures show a marginal improvement over September’s forecast, which projected a 4.4% decline for 2024 to $140 billion, the December revision does little to alleviate concerns about the financial pressures farmers face heading into 2025, and the overall figure masks the dramatic decline in returns for crop farmers.

When adjusted for inflation, the drop in net farm income becomes more pronounced, with a projected decline of $9.5 billion (6.3%) from 2023. Although the updated 2024 figure remains above the 20-year average, the metrics paint a challenging picture, particularly for crop producers, who face substantial revenue declines. While some sectors, most predominantly livestock, are seeing stronger receipts, the December forecast underscores that agriculture remains in the red, with few signs of immediate relief for farmers already navigating tight margins.

Soy Checkoff Yields Impressive Returns

The United Soybean Board continues to deliver economic returns to U.S. soybean farmers through strategic investment. That’s despite a challenging economic landscape of low commodity prices and tight margins. This remains critical to ensure farmers receive measurable value on-farm and through expanded opportunities. A recent study confirms the soy checkoff’s positive return of at least 4.5-1 on investment across the categories of export market development, domestic demand-enhancing research, on-farm production research, and soybean promotion.

Cumulatively, soy-checkoff-funded initiatives at the national and state level supported almost 31,000 jobs, added $2.6 billion in labor income, contributed $5.9 billion in total value, and increased the U.S. GDP by $9.8 billion. “We focus on maximizing the impact of every dollar invested by creating new revenue streams for farmers, building premium markets, and establishing partnerships here and abroad where farmers can see tangible returns,” says Phillip Good, USB’s Chair of the Audit Committee.

The study by Dr. Harry M. Kaiser of Cornell University highlights USB and the QSSB’s return on investment in improving the demand for U.S. soybeans and increasing the efficiency of soybean production.

“USB’s programs add distinct value to the economy, from supporting job growth to providing tax revenue gains,” said Dr. Kaiser. “When it comes to ROI, I’m most encouraged by the staggering growth in domestic demand research as soybeans seem to have no limits when it comes to versatility and performance in new formulations across industrial uses as well as delivering value for animal agriculture. Exports play a crucial role for U.S. soybeans, with over half of the crop reaching 80+ global markets, underscoring their importance to the industry’s growth and sustainability.”
