Latest WASDE Shows Big Drops in Corn and Soybean Production and Stocks

USDA released its Crop Production Annual Summary, World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE), Dec. 1 Grain Stocks and Winter Wheat Seedings reports on Friday. Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Rich Nelson at Allendale to get the details.

The most significant surprise was a sharp decline in US corn production by a staggering 276 million bushels. U.S. Corn ending stocks dropped almost 200 million bushels to 1.5 million bushels. This, coupled with a 90-million-bushel drop in US soybean ending stocks, tightened the market significantly.

“Over the past seven months, we’ve gone from a heavy supply year, to now, we are more or less back to normal,” Nelson noted.

While corn and soybeans saw major adjustments, the US wheat ending stocks remained unchanged, leaving the market relatively unfazed. The cotton report fell slightly short of market expectations, leading to a reassessment of market strategies by industry stakeholders.

USDA Winter Wheat Seeding Report Shows Oklahoma and Kansas Seedings Under a Year Ago

The 2024 Crop Production Annual Summary was published by USDA today and shows that most row crops in Oklahoma were down in production. Additionally, the Winter Wheat Seedlings Report was published as a first look at what is happening with winter wheat and Oklahoma’s State USDA Statistician Troy Marshall provided our own Stevie White with all of the details. He also provided a rundown on the annual summary for Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.

“We know we had some delays getting wheat planted due to drought, and then waiting for some of those larger rains to dry out enough to get it into the ground,” Marshall recalled. “I have heard some reports that some still don’t have all that they wanted in the ground.”

The amount of winter wheat anticipated to be in the ground in Oklahoma as of December 1, was 4.25 million acres, which is down only a little more than two percent from last year.

In Texas, that number was up about 6 percent to 5.8 million acres, and in Kansas, it was down about 3 percent from last year to 7.4 million acres.

Hereford Breed’s Growing Impact on Commercial Operations with Jack Ward

Jack Ward, Executive Vice President of the American Hereford Association since 2015, was on hand at the Cattlemen’s Congress. He and Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster Ron Hays met to discuss the breed and its presence at the Cattlemen’s Congress.

Ward shared that 325 Hereford cattle would be shown during the Open and 225 would be in the Junior show, with roughly fifteen Hereford pens being exhibited. “It’s going to be another great event – the cattle look incredible – we checked them in yesterday and I think it’s going to be a fantastic show,” he said.

According to Ward, 2024 was another good year for Herefords even though registrations were down a bit, as were cattle inventories; however, those declines were expected with overall cattle numbers down.

“Financially, we had a great year,” he said. “The association is in a very healthy place. The demand for the bulls was really incredible – we sold more bulls year-over-year for higher prices and it looks like we are going to get off to a very good start.”

Lankford Introduces Bill to “Lock The Clock”

Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced the Sunshine Protection Act, to officially “lock the clock” and end the twice-yearly time change and make Daylight Saving Time (DST) the national year-round standard.

“Twice a year Oklahomans ask themselves—why do we still have to change our clocks? Moms of young children dread the time of year when clocks change, but babies’ schedules don’t. It is past time to get this bill to the President’s desk so we can stop the annoying twice-a-year reset of the clocks. Let’s lock the clocks,” Lankford said.

“I hear from Americans constantly that they are sick and tired of changing their clocks twice a year – it’s an unnecessary, decades-old practice that’s more of an annoyance to families than benefit to them. In 2018, as Governor of Florida, I signed legislation that would allow the state to opt out of the practice of changing the time and I’ve been a leading effort in getting this done on the federal level. I’m excited to have President Trump back in the White House and fully on board to LOCK THE CLOCK so we can get this good bill passed and make this common-sense change that will simplify and benefit the lives of American families,” Scott said

Pollard Farms Donate Angus Foundation Heifer and Sell Top Bull During 5th Cattlemen's Congress

It was a good week for Dr. Barry Pollard and his wife Roxanne at the 2025 Cattlemen's Congress.

The video above shows the Heifer they donated to the Angus Foundation to support American Junior Angus Association efforts sold at the front end of the National Angus Bull Sale last Friday- POLLARD Rita 4012 raising $75,000 for the Angus youth programs.

Meanwhile- Pollard sold two thirds interest in the highest priced Bull seen to date in sales associated with Congress- as PF Hennessey 3920, brought $265,000 at the Denim and Diamonds Sale last Wednesday. Pollard Farms has retained one third interest in him. And a Pollard Heifer was the third highest selling female in the Angus Bases Loaded Sale last week.

As far as the success of the Cattlemen’s Congress is concerned, now in its fifth year, Dr. Pollard believed in it from its first event. “We have good leadership in this state,” he said. “This was an idea of Jerold Callahan, a dear friend of mine, and he put together a great group of people, and our governor has supported this.”

After the first Cattlemen’s Congress in 2021- Pollard says a poll was issued to all Angus breeders who attended year one asking if they preferred the event in Oklahoma City or the event it took the place of in Denver, the National Western Stock Show. Eighty percent preferred Oklahoma City over Denver.

ASA and NOPA Welcome 45Z Guidance That Addresses Impacts of Surging Imports

The American Soybean Association and National Oilseed Processors Association appreciate the U.S. Treasury Department’s notice of intent to propose regulation on the Clean Fuel Production Credit (45Z), which provides interim guidance for taxpayers to claim credits while developing a roadmap to spur additional investment in the domestic biofuel industry.

“ASA thanks the Biden administration and Treasury for listening to our concerns and developing guidance that supports U.S. farmers while strengthening our domestic biofuels industry,” said ASA President Caleb Ragland, a soy farmer from Kentucky. “The guidance released today is an investment in U.S. farmers, who stand ready to feed and fuel the world—while also fueling the U.S. economy. We look forward to working with Congress and the incoming Trump administration to build on this progress and develop final guidance that supports rural America.”

With imported waste feedstocks for biofuel production surging in recent years, ASA and NOPA have been sounding the alarm for the need to ensure the validity of imports while empowering U.S. farmers with access to growing domestic markets for soybean oil. The notice published today by the Treasury Department addresses these concerns by ensuring imported used cooking oil remains ineligible for the 45Z credit through the GREET model until such time that the Treasury can promulgate substantiation regulations for imports.
