House Reconciliation Bill Moves to the Senate: Government Leaders and Ag Groups React

American families, farmers, workers, and small businesses may soon see a massive surge in economic growth, wage gains, and higher incomes thanks to President Trump’s One, Big, Beautiful Bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives today and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

The reconciliation bill included several provisions that the agricultural industry was looking for in a farm bill. Several Government Leaders such as Congressmen Frank Lucas and Tom Cole issued responses to its passage, as did prominent ag groups such as the AFBF, NCBA, NPPC, ASA, and Growth Energy.

This Week on SUNUP: Dr. John Michael Riley Analyzes the Latest WASDE Report

This week on SUNUP, OSU Agriculture Economist Dr. John Michael Riley discusses the highs and lows of current grain and cotton markets.

Riley began with a review of last week’s WASDE report, and its sneak peek at the upcoming summer crops and a last look at winter crops before harvest.

“With regard to our wheat crop, ending stocks are expected to be 923 million bushels,” he said. “That is much higher than what the trade was expecting and flowing with what has been happening in the markets as of late – growing supplies, a lot of it weather driven, some of it export driven, but for the most part, ending stocks for wheat are expected to be higher than trade was expecting. That put some pressure on the market for the day, but for the most part, prices have been fairly steady throughout the month of May.”

Multiple Ag Groups Respond to MAHA Commission Report Released Today

The Presidential Commission to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) today released a groundbreaking assessment identifying key drivers behind the childhood chronic disease crisis. Coming just 98 days after President Trump signed an Executive Order establishing the MAHA Commission and tasking it with delivering a “Make Our Children Healthy Again Assessment,” the report exposes a range of contributing factors—including poor diet, accumulation of environmental toxins, insufficient physical activity, chronic stress, and overmedicalization.

Many ag groups were displeased with the report many saying it is contradictory, casts doubt and fear about farming practices, and doesn't follow science. Click the link below to read responses from AFBF, CropLife America, NFU, NCFC, and more.

USMEF Spring Conference Underway in Fort Worth

Representatives of the entire U.S. red meat supply chain gathered in Fort Worth, Texas, Wednesday as the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) opened its Spring Conference.

USMEF Chair Steve Hanson, a rancher, cattle feeder and grain farmer from southwestern Nebraska, welcomed members with an optimistic message, despite heightened uncertainty in the trade policy arena. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom built on this theme, noting that demand for U.S. red meat is at record levels in many international markets, even in the face of heightened competition. Rick Stott, president and CEO of Superior Farms, explained how community and industry interests came together to overcome a proposal advanced by anti-agriculture activists last year.  Keynote speaker Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax, provided USMEF members with a cautiously optimistic outlook on the U.S. cattle industry’s herd rebuilding efforts.

Trade Uncertainty is Depressing New-Crop Sales

The impact of the combined trade uncertainty has been most noticeable on new-crop (2025/26 marketing year) corn and soybean sales. Grain elevators and merchandisers typically book grain sales out several months, but today have seen reduced sales for the upcoming marketing year with most business moving to the spot market. While sales of corn, soybeans and wheat in the 2024/25 marketing year are ahead of last year’s pace, corn and soybean new-crop sales are well below historical averages.

U.S. new-crop soybean export sales totaling 518,100 tons as of May 1 were 88.2% under their historical five-year average and the lowest on that date since 2001. Corn sales of 2.2 MMT were 26.9% under their historical five-year average. All-wheat sales of 2.6 MMT were slightly ahead of their five-year average.
