Lawmakers Stop the Clock to End the Session- Override the Governor on 47 Bills

Things got crazy as the 2025 part of the 60th Session of the Oklahoma Legislature concluded- mostly with a series of Overrides of Vetoes from Governor Kevin Stitt- who used Social Media to apparently provoke many of those votes. That end of the session explosion of Veto Override votes overshadowed lots of the things accomplished by the lawmakers over the course of the year- and were pointed to the Leaders of the House and Senate in their joint release you can read on our website.

NonDoc has an excellent story that describes the chaotic final hours of this session- and quotes House Speaker Kyle Hilbert at 1 AM on Friday morning on what happened at the end: "There were some that the executive still had issues with us taking up for an override. We said, ‘OK, we’ll continue to have those conversations.’ And so while we were having those conversations, there was a video put out from the governor’s office calling on everybody to watch our votes come the next primary election season,” Hilbert said. “We felt like that was pretty much out of bounds to do that, because everything that we had been doing was in good faith with everything that we had committed to doing with the governor. And again, all the veto overrides in both chambers that we had taken up to that point, the governor had told us he had no issues with us taking up and overriding. (…) We were pretty frustrated when that video that came out, and so I told my team, I said, ‘Look, we did our part. We tried to have conversations with the executive branch. Now, if we have two-thirds votes, we’re going to put it up.’ And so that’s what we did.”.

Enhancing Beef Quality: Lee Leachman’s Vision for Improving Cattle Efficiency

Lee Leachman is the CEO of Leachman Cattle, based just North of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster Ron Hays had the chance to interview Mr. Leachman, and they covered many topics, including how technology is improving the cattle industry, on Thursday. On Friday, they discussed Leachman’s vision for a more efficient cowherd.

Leachman uses machines that can predict which animals will generate a more heavily muscled carcass while the animal is still on the hoof. “That’s important to me as a bull raiser, because I can’t cut up my bulls, because if I do, it’s really hard to use them!” Leachman said with a laugh. “I envision that we’ll have an EPD that will be pretty accurate, that will predict the saleable meat yield from a carcass. So, if you make a 900-pound carcass, and this one has five percent more, you can sell, that is worth quite a bit.”

Such a development would create greater efficiency by building better cattle at a lower cost, increasing profitability for the cattleman.

OSU Extension’s “AgricultHER” Conference Returns with Hands-On Learning

OSU Extension is gearing up for one of its “favorite events of the year,” the “AgricultHER” conference, a unique agricultural conference specifically designed for women in rural areas. Moving to Wilburton, Oklahoma, this year, the conference promises a highly interactive and hands-on experience, distinguishing it from more traditional informational events.

The conference will be held at Eastern Oklahoma State College campus in Wilburton. Informational sessions will take place indoors in the Student Center ballroom, while the hands-on sessions will be conducted outdoors on the school farm.  The “AgricultHER” Conference promises to be a day of valuable learning, practical skill-building, and supportive networking for women in agriculture across Oklahoma.

Wheat Harvest Cranking Up

Mike Schulte of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission told us on Sunday that there has been some cutting of wheat in the southwestern quarter of the state where fields have dried out enough to let combines roll- and he indicated there has been some test cutting in and around Kingfisher as well. Schulte says he will be releasing the first report of the season from the Wheat Commission later today

We found one post on Facebook from customer harvester Garrett Bachand who has a video of combines rolling in the Randlett area(just north of the Red River and just east of I-44 in Cotton County)- he says they are making 45 bushels per acre.

OSU Receives Historic $250M Investment to Build World-Class Veterinary Teaching Hospital

Oklahoma State University has received a historic $250 million state funding appropriation to support the construction of a new, state-of-the-art veterinary teaching hospital.

This critical investment — the largest state appropriation in university history — combined with $78 million allocated in 2023, marks a significant step forward in advancing the future of veterinary education, food security and public health in Oklahoma.

As one of just 33 accredited veterinary colleges in the United States, OSU plays a unique role in meeting Oklahoma’s veterinary workforce needs. Each year, more than 100 students are admitted to the program, with graduates serving all 77 counties in Oklahoma. This funding is also key to addressing Oklahoma’s rural large-animal veterinarian shortage — a pressing issue for agriculture and food production.

Oklahoma Tackles Rural Veterinary Shortage: A Collaborative Approach

The veterinary workforce in rural Oklahoma is facing a critical inflection point, as outlined in a recent assessment presented by Todd Greenwood of the Farm Journal Foundation. Greenwood was part of an Oklahoma Veterinary Shortage summit held at the HAMM Institute that gathered producers, veterinarians, and practitioners to discuss how to help with the vet shortage.

In a conversation with Oklahoma Farm Report’s Farm Director, KC Sheperd, Greenwood shared the findings of a comprehensive report that analyzes the current challenges and offers a strategic path forward to address the state’s growing veterinary shortage, particularly within food and livestock systems.

Senator Mike Lee’s OFF Act is an Attack on American Agriculture

The following is an OP-ED by Colin Woodall, Chief Executive Officer of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

Senator Mike Lee, R-UT, is at it again with his reintroduction of the Opportunities for Fairness in Farming (OFF) Act—a deceptively named bill that threatens the ability of farmers and ranchers to unite through self-funded commodity checkoff programs. These programs are created and governed by producers to support marketing, research and education for products like beef, dairy, Christmas trees and others—without taxpayer funding. Senator Lee’s relentless attacks on checkoff programs undermine the very backbone of American life, a safe, wholesome and affordable food supply.

Despite the title, there is nothing “fair” about this legislation, nor does it create opportunity for farmers and ranchers. Instead, the OFF Act completely undermines producers’ right to collectively invest in their industry. It limits the ability for producers to speak with one voice in a marketplace increasingly dominated by misinformation. It blocks the ability to differentiate real beef from a confusing array of fake products.

Secretary Rollins Leads Trade Delegation to Italy, Continues Aggressive Travel Agenda to Promote American Agriculture Worldwide

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins will visit Rome, Italy, on June 2-3. During her visit, Secretary Rollins will reinforce the Administration’s expectations for improved agricultural market access to Italy and the European Union and will encourage the United Nations organizations in Rome to prioritize American interests, reduce costs, and focus on their core mandates.

Secretary Rollins has made it a top priority to advocate on behalf of American agriculture on the world stage. This means increasing access for American products in existing markets, opening new markets with strong demand for our products, and making sure trading partners are treating American farmers, ranchers, and producers fairly.

Oklahoma National Stockyards  had 6,821 head on the yards as of 9 PM Sunday evening. The sale will start at 6:30 am. We are expecting to start with 7,000 to 7,500.

According to USDA Market News on the last market that was held at ONSY before the Memorial Day holiday on May 19th- "Compared to the previous week: All classes of cattle 5.00-10.00 lower. Demand moderate to good. Most feeder cattle had a flick of ear, thin fleshed, and plain. Calves were moderately fleshed plain to average. Despite the plain quality and last week's downturn in cattle futures, the market remained relatively strong, reflecting continued buyer demand and underlying market support."
