The Oklahoma Wheat Commission Calls Harvest a Standstill Due to Heavy Rains Across the State

Oklahoma wheat harvest is at a standstill across the state as of this morning. Oklahoma Wheat Commission Executive Director Mike Schulte remarked to us that this harvest scenario is "one for the books" and he did not mean it in a good way. Some minor harvesting continued in parts of Southwest Oklahoma yesterday, but most places were rained out. Southwest of Altus and North of Altus got heavy rains that moved East causing large amounts of moisture in Grady County and locations further east of the I-35 corridor. Rains and high humidity also delayed harvest from taking place in Central Oklahoma.

More rain is predicted to start later today and continue through the weekend across western Oklahoma. The graphic above shows rainfall predictions for the US June 5th thru June 10th. Notice Oklahoma is painted red and purple- predicting at least an inch and a half of rain and upwards to four inches between now and next Tuesday. The next Oklahoma harvest report from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission will be published on Monday, June 9, 2025. Let's pray the NWS has got it wrong- and dry conditions will set in to allow combines across the southern plains to roll.

Exploring U.S. Meat Exports with Dan Halstrom: The Importance of Market Access

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, caught up with USMEF president and CEO, Dan Halstrom, and talked about the conference, which was attended by many stakeholders in meat exports.

Yesterday, they discussed the situation in China, and today, they are talking about the U.S.’s number one customer – Latin America. According to Halstrom, the key to keeping those markets strong is maintaining market access. Additionally, the personal relationships developed over decades of trade with these countries, along with the expansion of the middle class, and the growth of purchasing power in Mexico, have made the country a marque market for the United States.

Four State Beef Councils Partner to Connect Dieticians with the Beef Story

The Oklahoma Beef Council in partnership with the Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska beef councils hosted Nutrition Adventure in May. The two-day, immersive educational event was designed to connect registered dietitians with the people and practices behind beef production.

Held in the greater Lincoln, NE area, the checkoff-funded event welcomed 25 dietitians from 15 states, representing a range of specialties—from university foodservice directors to nationally recognized social media influencers.

Day one focused on the science of beef and practical skills dietitians can take back to their clients. To help clear up misconceptions, day two focused on the full beef production story.

One Big Beautiful Bill Act: Agricultural Provisions

The House of Representatives’ advancement of H.R.1, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” marks a significant step toward restoring longer-term certainty for farmers and ranchers after a series of short-term extensions of the 2018 farm bill. The bill combines several Farm Bureau-supported provisions, across commodity programs and tax policy, into one comprehensive package.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the House-passed version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act would increase agriculture-facing programs spending by $56.6 billion over the next decade (fiscal years 2025–2034). Of the total increase, $52.3 billion is tied to enhancements in the farm safety net, such as higher reference prices under Price Loss Coverage (PLC), adjusted formulas for Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and expanded crop insurance support. The remaining $4.3 billion includes investments in trade promotion, rural school funding, livestock biosecurity, research and energy programs.

Representative Tracey Mann Engages Farm Broadcasters on Global Hunger Initiatives

Representative Tracey Mann recently met with farm broadcasters to discuss the critical issue of hunger.

Tracing the roots of American food aid, Mann recounted the story of a Kansas farmer in the 1950s whose idea to send surplus wheat to starving populations overseas led to the creation of the Food for Peace Program by President Eisenhower. However, he expressed concerns about the program’s evolution, particularly the shift from sending American-grown commodities to direct cash transfers. He argued that commodity shipments not only benefit American agriculture but also foster goodwill towards the U.S. Furthermore, he emphasized the national security implications of international hunger, citing the destabilizing effects of food insecurity.

Mark Johnson on the Relationship of Bermudagrass Yield to Nitrogen Fertilization

Mark Johnson, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Breeding Specialist, offers herd health advice as part of the weekly series known as the “Cow Calf Corner,” published electronically by Dr. Derrell Peel, Johnson, and Paul Beck. Today, Johnson discusses the relationship of bermudagrass yield to nitrogen fertilization.

Bermudagrass has some highly beneficial characteristics. Yield, persistence, nutritional value, timing of growth and production, tolerance to heavy grazing, responsiveness to fertilization and resistance to herbicides. A key benefit of Bermudagrass is the potential to support higher stocking rates than native range. On the downside, Bermudagrass requires these inputs on an annual basis in order to achieve maximum productivity.

Livestock Marketing Association Praises Introduction of the HERITAGE Act

Livestock Marketing Association, or LMA, applauds the introduction of the Helping Ensure Rural Inheritance Transfers Are Generationally Enduring, or HERITAGE, Act. The bill, set in motion by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Mississippi), would help preserve family-owned agricultural land by adjusting the Internal Revenue Code that forces many families to sell their farmland to pay federal estate tax liabilities.

Mike VanMaanen, LMA president and owner of Eastern Missouri Commission Co., applauded the bill. “As an auction market owner and cattleman, I see firsthand how the death tax negatively impacts not only livestock producers, but our nation’s food security,” he said. “We appreciate Sen. Hyde-Smith’s commitment to the cattle industry, rural communities and consumers everywhere.”
