Oklahoma and Kansas Wheat Harvest Faces Delays, But Hope Remains for Strong Yields

The annual wheat harvest in the Southern Plains is off to a slower and more challenging start this year, according to Paul Paplow of Paplow Custom Harvesting and Trucking, who also represents the U.S. Custom Harvesters. While some progress has been made, persistent wet weather and earlier drought conditions in the south are impacting the pace.

The primary concern now is not drought, but an abundance of rain. “It’s just constant rain,” Paplow lamented. “And we haven’t had big rains, just enough to keep us from doing anything lately.” Despite the delays, Paplow expressed optimism about the potential yields in Oklahoma and Kansas.

Insights from USMEF’s Dan Halstrom on Global Meat Trade Dynamics

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, had the chance to speak with United States Meat Export Federation President and CEO Dan Halstrom soon after the close of the USMEF Spring Conference in Fort Worth. The event was attended by stakeholders and regional office reps of the USMEF.

On Tuesday, they discussed the trade situation in China, and yesterday, they spoke about the U.S.’s number one customer, Latin America, and touched on the U.S./U.K. trade agreement. In this, the third part of their conversation, the two men are discussing the good work U.S. Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins was doing in Europe earlier this week and the changing dynamics of trade due to tariffs.

According to Halstrom, the European Union (EU) represents a lot of opportunity spanning beyond beef and pork into other commodities as well. A challenge of trade with the EU is that often their policy and science don’t line up. One example is the refusal to approve acid spray washes on carcasses, a practice that the rest of the world accepts.

Lucas Holds First Conservation Subcommittee Hearing

Today, the Subcommittee on Conservation, Research, and Biotechnology held its first hearing entitled, “Supporting Farmers, Strengthening Conservation, Sustaining Working Lands”.

As Chair of the subcommittee, Congressman Frank D. Lucas (OK-03) opened the hearing by examining the policies that led to the Dust Bowl and the subsequent efforts to restore conservation in American agriculture. He then emphasized the need to pass the next Farm Bill to further improve voluntary conservation efforts. You can watch his opening remarks here.

He then had the opportunity to question witnesses on a variety of topics, including the watershed and flood prevention program as well as the need to simplify voluntary conservation programs so they can be accessible for all producers. You can watch his full Q&A here.

This Week on SUNUP: John Michael Riley says Forecasted Weather may Positively Impact Wheat Prices

This week on SUNUP, OSU Agriculture Economist Dr. John Michael Riley discusses the highs and lows of current grain and cotton markets.

Going into summer, the wheat markets have been trending upwards over the past couple of weeks. The wheat futures market was at $5.42 at the time of recording, up $0.32 from two weeks ago.

According to Riley, if the weather continues as predicted, wheat prices should continue to rise, because the crop may be damaged. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission reported more producers than normal, saying that they may not even harvest their crop this year.

Farm Bureau President Emphasizes Challenges for Aging Farm Workforce

American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall testified Wednesday on the challenges facing agriculture, as more farmers reach retirement age while fewer young farmers are entering the profession. Mr. Duvall testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging.

President Duvall addressed a wide-ranging list of issues and said it’s crucial to ensure farmers can survive tough economic times to pass their farms to the next generation. Almost 40% of all farmers are at or beyond retirement age, while just 8% of farmers are under the age of 35. “As I travel to farms across this country, I see a lot of gray hair, and while the wisdom of older generations is critical, we must ensure that we are making the way for young and beginning farmers to fill our boots.” Watch the video clip here.
