Oklahoma Wheat Commission Says Great Harvest Progress Made- Now 22% Done

Oklahoma wheat harvest has producers cutting from the Oklahoma/Texas to Oklahoma/Kansas state line. Harvest is moving fast in several regions where producers and crews have been able to get across the ground.  In several other locations producers have had to fight wet ground and mud making the process much slower.

Test weights reported at all locations ranging from 58 lbs. to 63 lbs. per bushel, most of the wheat is still coming in at 60 lbs. per bushel or higher. We have seen lower test weights in parts of Southern Oklahoma along the Hwy 281 corridor due to heavier rains in this region. (Several fields have also been abandoned and will never be harvested along the 281 corridor due to excessive flooding.) Yields across the state are being reported from the mid 30’s to mid 50’s for the most part. Producers with management intensive plans have been reporting yields in the mid 60’s to low 80’s. Protein across the state averaging 11.1%.  Due to several locations making great progress in parts of Southwest, Central, and North Central, OK the OWC is calling harvest 22% completed at the time of this report.

Michael Kelsey Sees Wins and Losses for Oklahoma Cattlemen in 2025 Legislative Session

Oklahoma Farm Report’s Ron Hays talked with Executive Vice President Michael Kelsey of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association as they recalled OCA’s wins and losses of the 2025 Oklahoma legislative session.

A major win, according to Kelsey, was the $250 million budgeted for an important building project. Another big win was House Bill 1027, which requires people who are gathering signatures for a state question to obtain them from a minimum of 18 or 19 counties rather than only one.

Counted as a loss, the OCA team didn’t succeed in preventing the reduction of the state income tax by another quarter point. Even more concerning to Kelsey was the Pathway to Zero bill.

Lucas and Sec. Rollins Discuss Revamping Conservation Programs for Producers

The House Agriculture Committee held a hearing with USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins.

Congressman Frank D. Lucas (OK-03) questioned Secretary Rollins about the Climate Smart Commodities grant process under the Biden Administration and what the current USDA under President Trump is doing to revamp the program by making it more producer-focused. Jump Back Loretta! We Remember Gary England

Over the years, whenever I was driving up the northwest passage towards Woodward and onward to Guymon- passing through Seiling always brought a smile and a thought of one of their favorite sons- News9 Meterologist Gary England.

One of the stops I have made in my career as a farm broadcaster here in Oklahoma came in 2006 when I joined the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network that was owned by Griffin Communications . That meant I was working in the same building as THE Weatherman who stood and shoulders above them all- Gary England. Over the years I was at News9 before he retired- it was a highlight when I got to say hi and talk ag and the weather with him- and he would light up when we visited about northwest Oklahoma- his stomping grounds. Our friend Senator James Lankford said it well in a tribute to Gary:

“Cindy and I are saddened by the passing of Gary England—a U.S. Navy veteran and pioneering force in television meteorology. Born and raised in Seiling, Oklahoma, Gary earned international recognition for his groundbreaking innovations in weather technology, including implementing the world’s first commercial Doppler weather radar in 1981 and becoming the first person in history to use it to issue direct warnings to the public. His innovations in advanced warnings undoubtedly saved countless lives across the country."

One thing is for sure- Friday Night in the Big Town will always be one of those iconic sayings of so many of us here in Oklahoma because of our beloved Gary England!

We invite you to listen to us on great radio stations across the region on the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network weekdays-

Recent Rains Dramatically Raise Oklahoma Lake Levels, More Rain Expected

Yesterday, in the preemptive hours before more rainfall arrived, State Climatologist Gary McManus provided an update on current lake and reservoir levels across the state, alarming in some areas.

While Lake Lugert-Altus in Southwest Oklahoma is still six feet below capacity as of June 9, 2025, Kaw Lake, near Ponca City, is 22 feet above normal, as is Hugo Lake in the Southeast. McManus compared these levels to what they were a few months ago on February 24: Lake Lugert-Altus was twelve feet below normal, Kaw Lake was normal, and Hugo Lake was a foot above normal.

Paul Beck asks "Is Profitability Possible for Stocker Producers in Today’s Cattle Market?"

Weekly, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist Paul Beck offers his expertise on the beef cattle industry. This is part of the weekly series known as the “Cow Calf Corner,” published electronically by Dr. Derrell Peel, Mark Johnson, and Beck. Today, he discusses profitability for stockers in today’s cattle market.

Recalling the old adage, Beck advised, “Buy low, sell high, keep them alive, and put gain on them cheap”. When managed properly, stocker programs can add significant value to your cattle operation. Prioritize animal health, forage quality, nutrition, and cost control. With the right approach, stocker producers can upgrade discounted calves and turn a profit.

US Meat Exports Face Headwinds in China, But Find Success Elsewhere in April

US beef and pork exports experienced a downturn in April, primarily due to significant obstacles in the Chinese market. However, strong performances in other key regions helped to offset some of these losses, according to Dan Halstrom, CEO of the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

Despite the challenges in China, the beef sector saw considerable positive movement in other parts of the world. Halstrom highlighted robust growth in Korea, which was up 18%. Central America also showed significant increases, as did Japan and South America. Within South America, while Chile and Peru posted good figures, Colombia emerged as “the bright spot.”

OKC West in El Reno had 5,597 head on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week

According to USDA Market News- "Compared to last week: Feeder steers 6.00-11.00 higher. Feeder heifers 2.00-7.00 higher. Quality average. Despite futures being mixed, cash prices remain exceptionally high: live cattle bids ranged from $235-$240 in the south. Buyer activity remained strong today, supported by tightening supplies that continue to strengthen the market. Steer calves over 500lbs. 3.00-5.00 higher, under 500lbs unevenly steady. Heifer calves 2.00-4.00 lower. Quality plain all the way to attractive. Demand moderate to good. Plain cattle sold very well, no trend to set on them but a stronger undertone noted. The strongest factor influencing buyer demand continues to be long time weaned, with quality remaining a secondary consideration. Buyers are prioritizing cattle that are hard and well adapted, capable of withstanding the upcoming summer heat and humidity without experiencing health setbacks."

Meanwhile- OKC West Manager Bill Barnhart writes on Facebook: "With price records occurring in live cattle, boxed beef, and all classes of stockers and feeders there seems to be no end to the optimism in the market. Some classes were incredibly 10.00 higher today. Light trade developed in the south already this week from 235-240. How high can this market go? Barring any black swan events it will stay aggressively high until there are enough cattle around us to satisfy everyone’s needs.

We should start to see a few more numbers as soon as the trade area dries out."
