If Grain Sorghum is in Your 2010 Plans- Check Out These Meetings
Thu, 14 Jan 2010 6:05:08 CSTFor the last several years, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service has provided producers with a series of educational programs to improve grain sorghum production, management and marketing. This year's educational series will be held in several counties in northwest Oklahoma during the first week of February. There are 9 different locations for the series and producers have the chance to listen to a variety of speakers on grain sorghum.
Maybe the most important topic for 2010 is the addition of 2 new herbicide options for weed control in grain sorghum. Both have different modes of action to control weeds and are using new families of herbicides to protect the 2010 grain sorghum crop. Dr. Joe Armstrong, OCES Weed Control Specialist, will be coving this topic.
There are locations around northwest Oklahoma that have lowered soil pH levels over time. Dr. Brian Arnall, OCES Soil Fertility Specialist, will review his experiments on what the lower soil pH levels is costing you and also make some suggestions on starter fertilizers.
If grain sorghum is being considered in your crop rotation, Dr. Rodney Jones will look at the economic considerations of the 2010 grain sorghum crop. Within his discussion, he will address market outlook and the production budgets of grain sorghum as well as other crops such as corn, soybeans and sunflowers for comparison.
This past crop season was the first year for the Grain Sorghum Producers Check-off Program. We have invited Dr. Jeff Dahlberg, Research Director for the National Sorghum Producers Association, to review the program and directions for the check-off program and how it relates to Oklahoma producers.
Also speaking will be Rick Kochenower, OCES Area Agronomist, on grain sorghum production issues and Roger Don Gribble, OCES Area Agronomist on conditioning the grain sorghum crop for harvest.
This program will be presented in 2 locations on Monday, February 1st. At noon, the program will be presented in Gate at the Midwest Crop Service Building and in Fairview at 6:00 pm at the Major County Fairgrounds.
On Tuesday, February 2nd, the program will be presented in Marland at the Marland Community Center at 7:30 am. Following that program, producers can meet at the Woods County Fairgrounds in Alva at 1:30 pm.
On Wednesday, February 3rd, the meetings will start in Guthrie at the Logan County Fairgrounds at 7:00 am and then again in the Hoover Building located on the Garfield County Fairgrounds beginning at 1:00 pm.
The final day of presentations will be Thursday, February 4th. At 9:00 am the program will start in Blackwell at the Kay Electric Cooperative Educational Building. The next program will be in Cherokee at the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds. The Cherokee program will begin at 1:00 pm. The final presentation will be held in Medford at the Medford City Offices starting at 6:30 pm.
There will be plenty of information to share and encourage producers to visit with these speakers about these and other topics related to the grain sorghum industry. If you have questions about these programs, please contact your OCES Ag Educator. They can help direct you to the locations for the meetings and updates if there are poor weather conditions that may influence travel to these locations.
