Does NCBA's Structure Change Matter Outside of the Organization Itself???
Fri, 29 Jan 2010 6:39:21 CST
Does the debate over the future structure of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association matter to anyone except members of the NCBA? The answer seems to be very much "yes." And, concern about the policy division of the NCBA getting to be too "cozy" with the Federation part of the group raised red flags galore during the Cattlemen's Beef Board Update session on Thursday afternoon here in San Antonio. We try to give you at least a short version of the arguments that are central to the issue on today's Beef Buzz.
During the discussion, we offered several "Tweets" from the room- including "Iowa member of CBB says it might be legal at end of the day- BUT does it pass the smell test?" and "AFBF's Mary Kay Thatcher asking questions about perception of mixing Fed & policy issues. She wants to know how chkoff money might be involved." The perception versus any legal assurances that Jan Lyons of the NCBA Governance Task Force was able to offer did not seem to line up in this meeting.
Over the course of Thursday, we talked to several folks on this subject- and you can click here for our full conversation with Jan Lyons and her explanation of the recommendation that the Task Force will be asking NCBA's leadership to vote on Saturday.
After the at times very rough session on Thursday afternoon with members of the Cattlemen's Beef Board, we talked with one of the Cattlemen Beef Board members from Oklahoma, Bob Drake.
Drake's biggest fear is that enough ill will may develop from the pursuit of this change in the makeup of NCBA that any hope of uniting the industry to pursue a vote on raising the beef checkoff from one dollar to perhaps two dollars will be gone for a very long time. Click here for the complete conversation with Bob Drake here in San Antonio on this possible strutural change and how it could impact the dollar beef checkoff.
We offer short comments from both Lyons and Drake with our explanation of why this decision by NCBA members has impact on anyone who raises cattle and contributes to the beef checkoff.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
