Oklahoma House Ready for Vote on HB 3202
Thu, 04 Mar 2010 8:00:46 CST
HB 3202, the measure that deals with Equine Dentistry and other animal husbandry practices, may be voted on by the full Oklahoma House later today. The measure, as originally introduced and approved by the House Agriculture Committee, would amend the Oklahoma Veterinary Practice Act; adding definitions for animal husbandry and teeth floating and adding procedures not to be prohibited by the act. The specific acts that will be addressed by this measure include performing acts of Equine Dentistry, Farrier Work and traditional animal husbandry practices.
Oklahoma Farm Bureau Vice President for Public Policy, Lori Peterson, tells us that there has been negotiations among several parties interested in this legislation that will allow these procedures not to be prohibited by the Vet Practice Act. Language that is being included in the final measure going to the floor will mandate that those who are performing these practices as a profession will need to be certified by the State Vet Medical Board, but that any complaints against people involved in these procedures, like a person doing "teeth floating," will not go to the Vet Board, but rather will be filed with the State Veterinarian, who is a part of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.
A vote on HB3202 may come later today, before the lawmakers go home for the weekend. Action on a companion measure in the State Senate, SB1999, has been on hold to see the results of negotiations on the House version of the measure.
