Mon, 08 Mar 2010 19:05:07 CST
The 2010 Commodity Classic had a Washington policy session on the final day of the event in Anaheim, and those providing a look at current issues that will have impact on rural America inlcuded Chandler Goule of NFU & Mary Kay Thatcher of AFBF with the moderator being Sara Wyant if Agri-Pulse.
Topic one was a look at the probability that we could see budget reconciliation sometime in the near future in Washington. Mary Kay Thatcher says nutrition programs won't be cut if reconciliation is demanded-burden in USDA on cuts will go to farm programs, crop insurance, research and probably conservation. On the Crop Insurance pot of money, a lot of people are already lusting after that money to use for their priority projects. Thatcher pointed out that in the coming year- and for years after that, it is likely we will spend more money on crop insurance outlays than on farm program spending.
The panel also talked Climate Change, Estate Taxes, Regulatory Issues and even some comments about the "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" efforts at USDA.
We had the chance to talk with both Chander and Mary Kay about some of these issues- and you can hear their comments by clicking on the Listen Bar below.
