Vilsack Ridicules Bush Administration Efforts to Get Wider Opening of the Japanese Market for US Beef
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:15:26 CST
US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack used sarcasm in a news briefing to show his disdain for the efforts of the Bush Administration in dealing with Japan on the sale of US beef into what was once our largest beef export customer. That was, of course before December 2003 and the Cow that Stole Christmas.
Vilsack said he could not believe that former Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns, who is now Nebraska Senator Johanns had said he saw no movement within the Obama Administration in attempting to convince the Japanese to make some moves to open their market wider to US Beef.
Vilsack told reporters at the Commodity Classic news conference that he was headed to Japan next month- and that will be a top item on his list of things to talk to his counterparts about.
He also indicated that the Obama Administration was willing to work with the Japanese to reopen their market to US beef on an incremental basis, including the idea of jumping from 20 months of age as the upper limit of the age of the animals from which beef can come from to a 30 month upper limit.
Vilsack's comments make up this Beef Buzz.
