Best Potential in the Panhandle Wheat Crop in a Decade- Rick Kochenower
Fri, 12 Mar 2010 6:45:20 CST
The Oklahoma Panhandle 2010 Hard Red Winter Wheat Crop has the best potential it has had in a decade- or longer. So says the OSU Extension Area Agronomist Rick Kochenower. As we help moderate the events at this year's Panhandle Ag Appreciation Days in Guymon, we had the chance to sit down and talk with him about the 2010 wheat crop, as well as what he sees happening in planting choices for the acres that will go to spring crops this year.
Kochenower believes that most wheat fields in the Panhandle are still a few days away from reaching the first hollow stem stage of growth development- so cattle can continue to grze those dual purpose fields.
Kochenower believes that farmers are more open minded about getting away from continuous wheat production and rotating other crops on that land- hopefully breaking the weed cycle that has gradually gotten worse in many wheat fields.
