The Oklahoma Pork Council has inducted John Thomas, vice president of Tyson Foods, Inc. and general manager of The Pork Group, Inc., into their Hall of Fame. OPC presented this award to Thomas on Thursday, March 25, during the Oklahoma Pork Congress awards banquet.
Thomas was selected to be inducted into the OPC Hall of Fame for his contributions to establishing commercial pork production near Holdenville, Okla., and supporting pork producers who raise pigs for The Pork Group, Tyson's live pork production division.
"I've always felt like John knows our needs, cares about our needs and does everything he can to provide us what we need," said Dottie King, pork producer from Calvin, Okla., who raises pigs for The Pork Group.
"One of the most wonderful parts of my job is being able to work with some really, really great Oklahoma farm families," said Thomas.
Thomas always encourages the Tyson employees and pork producers he works with to be involved in the Holdenville community and support events and civic organizations in that area, said Lori Ramsey, environmental health and safety manager for Tyson who has worked with Thomas for many years.
Thomas received his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University. He began his tenure with Tyson Foods, Inc., in 1984 as a manager trainee at a sow farm. He worked in many capacities for Tyson over the years and was named director of operations in 1994.
"John is very deserving of this award and we are pleased to recognize him for his many contributions to the pork industry," said Roy Lee Lindsey, Jr., OPC executive director.
Thomas was the first member of the Oklahoma Pork Council board of directors who was a company employee and he served on the board during the expansion of the OPC budget and development of many of the programs OPC oversees today.
"I am extremely humbled by the honor of being inducted into the OPC Hall of Fame," said Thomas.
