Fresh Voice for the Livestock Markets Steps Into the Spotlight- David Macedo of California

The 2010 meeting of the Livestock Marketing Association was not just the World Livestock Auctioneer Contest- although that's their spotlight event within their meeting each year. However, new President David Macedo of California visited with us about a couple of key issues that are on the minds of the livestock industry, including those that help market livestock through the auction process.
Animal well being has to be a priority for the livestock auctions of the country- as they are a very public place where livestock are handled- with the animals many times under a lot of stress due to being trucked into the market, having to stand on concrete for hours for the first time in their lives and then be moved through a series of gates and chutes and enclosed scales in a very confusing and loud environment. We talked with Macedo about how the livestock marketing business is approaching this subject and how we make sure the "bad actors" are dealt with.
Animal ID- or animal disease traceback- was another subject that we talked with Macedo about. He says it's important that regional differences in how we handle livestock are taken into account in any system that is developed.
David Macedo's comments are a part of our Monday edition of the Beef Buzz.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
