Reglone Desiccant Now Registered for U.S. Winter Canola
Wed, 02 Jun 2010 21:34:19 CDT
Farmers in the Great Plains and southeast now have access to a new tool for canola crop management: Reglone® desiccant, the only product available for canola to dry it uniformly before harvesting. Reglone® will be especially helpful to growers who direct-harvest or straight-cut canola, which has been an unmet need in winter canola-growing regions.
The Environmental Protection Agency recently approved Reglone® for use as a harvest desiccant on canola and state registrations have already been granted in Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Other state registrations are pending. Reglone®, with the active ingredient diquat, is available through Sygenta Crop Protection.
"This product will be great in our toolbox as a harvest management option," said Great Plains Canola Association President Jeff Scott of Pond Creek, Okla. "It will make direct harvesting much easier."
Nearly 90,000 acres of winter canola were planted in the Great Plains this year and are expected to increase significantly. Reglone® allows crops to be harvested earlier and more quickly and easily than non-desiccated crops, while optimizing both yield and quality. Access to a desiccant will help producers grow more canola more successfully, according to John Haas, canola grower in Larned, Kan., and member of the U.S. Canola Association's board of directors.
"Being able to use a desiccant is important because we can harvest earlier and save the crop from shattering," he said. "Without question, it will increase U.S. canola acres in some areas."
Demand for canola products in the United States far outpaces supply, in large part due to the desirable attributes of canola oil for cooking. With the least saturated fat of all cooking oils, a neutral taste, light texture and high heat tolerance, canola oil is an ideal kitchen staple. It also makes an excellent feedstock for biodiesel production. Moreover, canola meal is sought after as a nutritious component of animal feed, particularly for dairy cows.
