Pushed Canola Harvest in Pictures- Part Four

Mon, 07 Jun 2010 7:08:11 CDT

Pushed Canola Harvest in Pictures- Part Four Winter Canola Harvest is underway- and a big fan of this alternative crop for wheat producers is Canadian County Extension Educator Brad Tipton. Tipton believes that this crop has the potential to save wheat production in the state of Oklahoma, as it allows farmers to finally break an escalating problem with competing weeds that are showing up in the wheat fields more and more each growing season.

Part Four of our picture series of this Winter Canola Harvest in Canadian County shows the wrapup stages of this quarter of canola being harvested after being pushed back on the 27th of May.

Our top picture shows the final passes by the combines through this quarter section of land farmed by the Zum Mallen Farms just north of El Reno.

Picture two is looking out over the harvested field- it is very clear that the 'pushed' canola picked up and threshed perfectly. Also, note the lack of W-E-E-D-S out across this field and in between the planting rows of HyClass 115W Roundup Ready canola! Last year this field was covered with Rescuegrass, Cheat, and a horrible infestation of Italian Ryegrass. This year- a totally different result as there was no grassy weed seed produced on this quarter in 2010.

Picture number three shows the filled hoppers of the combines and very cleanly thrashed canola with these 9770 STS John Deere Rotary Combines. Our final picutre in this series shows the canola berries loaded in semi trailers- this 160 acres yielded right at 40 bushels of canola per acre and filled four and half Semi trailers with "Black Gold."

Canola Harvest winds down for this quarter section as the top picture shows the final passes- the second shot shows a clean field- no weeds after the canopy of canola has been stripped away and the third and fourth photos are of the black canola berries in first the combine hopper and then the semi trailer- ready to head for PCOM in Oklahoma City.
