Statewide, Congressional District and State Legislative Races Now Set for 2010

Wed, 09 Jun 2010 19:55:33 CDT

Statewide, Congressional District and State Legislative Races Now Set for 2010 The three day period for candidates to file for public office in Oklahoma has come and gone- with all Federal office incumbents that we running for reelection to face at least some level of challenge in either the primary in July or the general election in November.

For example, Senator Tom Coburn is up for reelection- and while it's highly unlikely that anyone can come close to beating the good Doctor- there are a whole gang of folks who at least want to be on the ballot with him. That includes two other Republicans, two Democrats and two Independents.

The only Democrat in the Oklahoma Congressional delegation, Second District Congressman Dan Boren has drawn a Democratic challenger as well as a half dozen Republican hopefuls. First District Congressman John Sullivan faces a crowded Republican primary field of five other candidates- and if he survives will then face Independent hopeful Angelia O'Dell. Third District Congressman Frank Lucas has no primary opponent- but will have a November general election race against Democrat Frankie Robbins. Fourth District Congressman Tom Cole has a Republican challenger next month- but no Democrat filed so the Republican winner is automatically in. Congressman Lucas is featured in our photo above- and if the Republicans can mount a tidal wave and regain the majority in the US House in November- Lucas potentially could become the first Oklahoma lawmaker to serve as the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.

The truly wild race for Congress in Oklahoma is the Fifth District where Mary Fallin has moved on to run for the Governor's Mansion- and there are two Democrats, two Independents and seven Republicans that will be trying to get through the primary season. The Republican winner seems to have the best chance in a seat that has been Republican for decades- and of the Republicans- there are a couple of current and former state lawmakers as well as James Lankford, who has no political experience, but has mounted an awesome social media and web presence to make his bid to advance to November.

Most of you are familiar with the choices for Governor- with Congresswoman and former Lt. Governor Mary Fallin the favorite to win the GOP Nomination- and will face the Democrat winner of the Jari Askins- Drew Edmondson shootout.

The Lt Governor race has two lawmakers that seem to have the best chance for success- Democrat Kenneth Corn of Poteau versus Republican Todd Lamb (although Lamb must beat four other Republicans for the right to be on the ballot in November.)

In the State Legislature- you can click here for the complete listing of candidates that have filed- for all races- Federal and State. However, there are several rural lawmakers that we wanted to list for you that are now done with the 2010 campaign- as they filed without opposition this week.

In the State Senate- the one name that jumped out at us was in District 28- Mike Schulz of Altus will be returned to the State Senate in 2011.

Over in the State House- among those who have no opposition so the race is over as of Wednesday evening-

District 12   Wade Rousselot, Wagoner (D)

District 13   Jerry McPeak, Warner (D)

District 19 RC Pruett, Antler (D)

District 24 Steve Kouplen, Beggs (R)

District 33 Lee Denny, Cushing (R)

District 38 Dale DeWitt, Braman (R)

District 40 Mike Jackson, Enid (R)

District 41 John Enns, Enid (R)

District 42 Lisa Billy, Lindsey (R)

District 47 Leslie Osborn, Tuttle (R)

District 57 Harold Wright, Weatherford (R)

District 59 Mike Sanders, Kingfisher (R)

District 60 Purcy Walker, Elk City (D)

District 63 Don Armes, Faxon (R)

District 65 Joe Dorman, Rush Springs (D)

The State Representative from the Oklahoma Panhandle, Gus Blackwell of Goodwell has a Republican and Democratic challenger- both in their twenties- hoping to unseat him.
