Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Very Close to Being Done

Sun, 27 Jun 2010 15:38:30 CDT

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Very Close to Being Done Two harvest reports from the Oklahoma and Southern Plains Wheat Fields.

First, we have the latest Oklahoma Wheat Commission Wheat Harvest Report- by Regions that still have wheat harvest underway:

Northeastern Oklahoma area:
Harvest is about done here. Some reports are near 99 percent, but some still say they are only 75 percent done. The random late season rains dumped different degrees of accumulation, causing more delays in some areas. It seems that 33 bushels per acre is the average yield reported to our office. Test weights have slipped slightly, but are still in the 58 to 60 pound range. There just aren't as many reports of 63 to 65 pound tests weights like earlier in harvest.

Northwestern Oklahoma area:
Estimates indicate this region is 85 percent done, give or take a few areas. This week has been a great one for harvesting wheat. High temperatures, low humidity and a nice breeze helped push harvest further along. Besides a few 55 to 65 bushels per acre yield reports, they have stayed constant in the 25 to 35 bushels per acre range. Test weights are averaging 58 pounds this week. If the weather is any indication, harvest should be done this weekend.

Panhandle area:
Harvest has progressed to irrigated wheat. Yield reports are coming in fairly high and producers are considered excited so far. Some yield reports to use are 8o bushels per acre and 76 bushels per acre. Moisture out that way is in the nine to 10 percent range. They are still hauling in a clean crop, with little dockage concerns as of now.

Meanwhile, Plains Grains has released their latest report, which pegs Oklahoma harvest at 80% done as of Friday morning. As of Sunday afternoon- that number may be closer to 85 or 90%. There have been rainshowers in some areas that have shut done the harvest that remains.

Here is the report from Plains Grains courtesy of Mark Hodges:

Rain has again slowed harvest in the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandle's and southwest Kansas during the last several days, 1" to 3" totals were reported with hardest hit areas located in the western Texas Panhandle. Lighter showers have plagued north central Oklahoma extending into south central and southeast Kansas.

Protein improved this week as harvest advanced into northern Oklahoma, the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and southern Kansas. This brings the overall protein average to 11.7% for this year's crop and compares to a final for the 2009 crop of 12.1%. On average, test weights dropped another pound per bushel from last week (61.9 to 60.8) (81.4to 79.9) because of rain. However, thousand kernel weights are still averaging 29.8 grams while foreign material and total defects remained the same this week. While foreign material did not increase, it continues to be significantly higher than last year's final number of 0.1%. Generally, wheat yields continue to be good and offsetting a reduction in planted acres in many states.

Harvest is projected to move rapidly again as fields dry out and the humidity drops. With just a few days of dry weather harvest could progress as far northward as the Kansas/Nebraska line. As was stated last week "harvesting in many rain soaked areas is becoming more important as broadleaf weeds are now starting to appear in many fields".
