Oklahoma Invasive Plant Council Plans Their Annual Meeting

Wed, 16 Jun 2010 16:27:32 CDT

Oklahoma Invasive Plant Council Plans Their Annual Meeting The Oklahoma Invasive Plant Council (OkIPC) was little more that just a good idea as recent as just a couple of years ago. However, through increased membership and accelerated sponsorships, the group is making its footprint in the state.

The group’s mission is “to facilitate efficient and effective management of invasive plants for the protection of the economic and natural resources of Oklahoma’s private and public land and water."

There are currently sponsors from a variety of industries related to invasive species. The seed industry, major chemical companies and state and federal agencies are represented through sponsorships.

Johnston Seed Co., USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Services, Oklahoma Farm Bureau, the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts, Clarke, DOW Agrosciences and NREM complete the current list of sponsors.

“The mission of the council couldn’t be fulfilled if it weren’t for these sponsors and our members,” said Karen Hickman, OkIPC president and professor of natural resource ecology and management at Oklahoma State University. “It’s encouraging to see these sponsors step up and we would love to have more.”

The sponsorships also help keep registration costs down for member and nonmembers who are interested in attending OkIPC annual meetings. This year’s meeting is scheduled July 14 at the OSU-OKC campus near the Oklahoma State Fair Park.

“Their support, as well as attending the meeting and becoming a member, is really helping us have the financial resources to develop educational brochures and posters so we can really start spreading the word concerning invasive species,” Hickman said.

People can visit the website to register for the meeting. Members can register for $30, while nonmembers can register for $55. There are also discounted rates for students, both members and nonmembers.

The meeting will include presentations given by experts so that attendees can become updated on various state and federal rules and regulations and be informed about activities going on in Oklahoma concerning invasive plants.
