Agri-Pulse is reporting a USDA spokesman has offered the following comment on the Compliance Review made of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and their handling of beef checkoff funds.
The statement follows:
"The Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) had an independent review of National Cattleman's Beef Association (NCBA) financial accounting system as part of its contractual review. AMS is in the process of reviewing the final review and seeing what additional steps or oversight may need to be taken.
"USDA has an obligation to farmers and ranchers to make sure that funds that are used from the check off accounts are not to be used to fund policy activities.
"The beef check off program plays a critical role in promoting producer products and addressing critical issues impacting the industry. Transparency, accountability and compliance are crucial components of the national research and promotion board program."
