Senators Support Proposed USDA Rules Clarifying GIPSA
Fri, 13 Aug 2010 17:05:19 CDTIowa Senator Tom Harkin and 20 other Senators wrote a letter to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack Friday stating support for USDA's action on proposing new regulations to clarify and strengthen the protections afforded by the Packers and Stockyards Act for livestock producers, swine production contract growers and poultry growers. The proposed rule responds to an order in the 2008 Farm Bill to explain how the protections in the Act apply to livestock and poultry marketing and contract production and growing arrangements.
Harkin says action in the 2008 Farm Bill and the proposed rule are designed to clarify the protections and the prohibited actions under GIPSA so producers and growers receive fair, equitable and nondiscriminatory treatment in marketing and contracting arrangements involving livestock and poultry. He says it's critically important that final rules account for the practical realities of livestock and poultry markets and contract arrangements - so he encourages all interested parties to take advantage of the extended comment period regarding the proposed regulations.
