Opening Travel to Cuba Has Interest
Wed, 22 Sep 2010 17:54:24 CDT
A bill that would open travel to Cuba has already passed the House Agriculture Committee, but the House Foreign Affairs Committee will have a say, if it moves forward this year. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman says he wants a committee vote on a bill before Congress recesses to campaign for congressional elections in November.
It is not known if the bill has enough support in the House for passage. The legislation would not only lift the U.S. ban on travel to Cuba but it would also remove hurdles on food sales to the island. A broad coalition of farm, business and human rights groups support the legislation as an important step toward ending the almost five-decade-old embargo on communist-led Cuba.
If the legislation does not pass this year, then lawmakers would have to start over from scratch in the new Congress. President Barack Obama has said he wants to – recast - ties with Cuba.
