For the second year in a row, Oklahoma had a dominating presence in the National Proficiency Awards that are selected and presented at the National FFA Convention each fall. In 2009, Oklahoma had the most National Finalists who competed in Indianapolis- and the most National Winners. That was repeated in 2010, as Oklahoma had a total of 22 National Finalists in the 47 Proficiency Award areas- and eight of those young men and ladies were declared the National winner in their category. California and Illinois were each able to claim five National Proficiency awards apiece, while Georgia, Nebraska and Wisconsin managed three apiece.
The 2010 National Proficiency Award in Swine entrepreneurship is Austin Kindschi of the Mulhall- Orlando FFA Chapter.
Austin Kindschi began his swine operation with three sows. Since then, he has worked to develop award-winning breeding stock. Kindschi markets 85% of his swine and 18 of those have won county championships with one being named State Fair Champion. He has sold pigs to young swine exhibitors in eight states.
