Feed Grain Price Volatility Makes Cattle Feeding Much Riskier Than Ten Years Ago
Mon, 08 Nov 2010 4:57:09 CST
Mike Thoren is the President and CEO of JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeders LLC- and our guest the next several days on the Beef Buzz. We are talking about where the cattle feeding business has been, where it is today and where it may be going with this key player in this segment of the beef cattle industry.
Thoren was on campus at Oklahoma State University this past week as the featured speaker of the Totusek Lectureship. Thoren has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding LLC since the Company's inception. From 2003 until 2005, Thoren was the President and CEO of ContiBeef LLC, a former wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Grain Company.
He began his career with the Cattle Feeding Division of Continental Grain Company in 1991 and worked his way up through the Company as feedyard general manager, director of feedlot operations, vice president of operations, and CEO. Thoren received his bachelor's in agribusiness and his master's in agricultural economics from Washington State University.
In part one of our conversation with Thoren, he talks with us about how volatility has changed the feedlot business over the last decade or so- and we also talk about some of the production practices that he sees as important in keeping costs under control and the beef being produced high quality.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
