Farm Supports Questioned by Young Farmers
Wed, 10 Nov 2010 17:37:03 CSTState Farm Bureau's are conducting policy meetings as they seek to determine the direction their associations should take as they focus on the issues important to agriculture. American Farm Bureau Federation director of public policy, Mary Kay Thatcher, says it appears most state policies will continue to focus on many of the previous identified issues.
At the same time many young Farm Bureau members prefer expanded market access overseas over a safety net. Arkansas farmer Kenny Qualls says - I just don't feel like the government owes me a safety net. However older farmers remember past cases when the safety net worked for them.
It all melts down to a budget issue and what farmers are ready to accept. As the next Farm Bill is crafted lawmakers will likely look for ways to reduce the federal budget and agriculture is one expected target. Most of the Department of Agriculture's budget deals with feeding the hungry, an area no one wants touch. What is left is the safety net. Some are saying insurance could become a prominate feature of safety net.
