Reasons for Volatility in the Grain Markets Hard to Pinpoint

Fri, 19 Nov 2010 5:50:22 CST

Reasons for Volatility in the Grain Markets Hard to Pinpoint The crazy moves up and then down in the recent ag commodity markets does not reflect any ties back to the fundamentals of the market, but rather several outside forces that include the intentions of the Commodity funds that have held huge stakes in the agricultural markets off and on in recent years.

OSU Grain Marketing Economist Dr. Kim Anderson tells Austin Moore with the weekly OSU Ag Communications produced SUNUP program that some of the jetters that we see in the market may be traced back to fears that the Commodity Funds may be ready to liquidate their positions, which could be a major shock to the ag markets.

You can see Austin and Kim discussing this situation on the weekly SUNUP program on OETA on Saturday morning- and before then- you can listen to their conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.

Beyond the Kim Anderson comments, Lyndall Stout, hostess of SUNUP, tells us that she and the SUNUP team have a great lineup for this weekend:

This week on SUNUP, David Freeman discusses formulating the right hay varieties for your horses.

In Cow-Calf Corner, Glenn Selk describes the relationship between body weight and breeding readiness in heifers.

Jody Campiche details the distribution of funds from the ACRE program -- part of the 2008 Farm Bill.

In Stop Shop, Randy and Wayne talk about cutting sheet metal at an angle.

Al Sutherland and his team discuss the recent rains and update statewide rainfall totals in the Mesonet forecast.

Derrell Peel discusses the impact of recent rains on cattle wheat grazing and how grazing could impact next year’s wheat yield.

And finally, Terry Bidwell explains the Firewise program and gives common sense advice on developing a fire prevention zone around your property.
