Strong Calf Prices As We End 2010 May Set the Table for Even Higher Prices in 2011

How much up is there in the current yearling and calf market? We talked about the price outlook of calves with OSU Livsetock Market Economist Derrell Peel of Oklahoma State University on today's Beef Buzz. The rally in recent days in the cattle market for calves and yearlings is remarkable- and sets the stage for jumping into uncharted waters of sky high prices in 2011.
The OKC West in El Reno market is a perfect focal point this morning for really strong yearling and calf prices. They had a big run, bigger than the Oklahoma National Stockyards this week, and sharply higher prices for calves as well as a higher market for yearlings. Several drafts of value added cattle were in the mix- and with farmers looking for a few more cattle to go onto wheat pasture- demand was high.
Some baby calves weighing from 200 to 400 pounds topped out over $1.70 a pound- four weight calves were as high as $1.55 to $1.59 a pound and five weight calves had a high end of $1.47 to $1.50. Keep in mind many of these top prices were for value added cattle- those of you who don't want to perform the management practices to properly wean and get your animals ready for market- you won't earn or deserve these top prices.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
