Mon, 06 Dec 2010 17:39:08 CST
President Barack Obama went behind closed doors Monday to discuss the ongoing tax negotiations with leading House Democrats, many of whom are believed to be unhappy with a potential deal to extend the Bush-era cuts for the richest Americans. A Democratic Congressional source told CNN; - we won't rubber stamp a deal between the White House and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. We want to make it clear. Don't take our support for granted.
Earlier Monday, Mr. Obama reiterated his position that extending the cuts for the wealthiest Americans would be fiscally irresponsible, and stressed the opinion of Democratic leaders that an extension of unemployment benefits needs to be part of any agreement with the GOP. Speaking in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the President said - we've got to make sure we are coming up with a solution, even if it is not 100 percent of what I want or what the Republicans want.
Before the meeting, White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters that negotiators - have been making progress and the President is confident within the next couple of days - they will reach a deal. Burton added, - the test for him is whether it strengthens the economy.
