New Chairman of House Ag Committee Frank Lucas Calls Proposed GIPSA Rule Clearly Contrary to Intent of Congress
Thu, 09 Dec 2010 3:55:52 CST
The US Department of Agriculture continues to post comments given to them by the public about the proposed rule on the marketing of livestock that was advanced by the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) in June of this year. The public comment period ended on November 22, and according to the government regulations website where all of the comments are being posted, they have just over 66,000 comments that have been offered- posted as recently as December 7th. It's unknown if they have finished posting the comments but we know that many very complicated responses on both sides of the issue were provided to USDA on the last few days of the public comment period.

It's now up to the livestock industry to wait on the USDA to sort through these thousands of comments, pro and con, about the GIPSA Rule. During this time of waiting, the newly elected Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas talked about the GIPSA Rule with Kevin Oschner of Cattlemen to Cattlemen, the TV show that is produced by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and seen on RFD TV. Lucas was interviewed on the same evening that word was coming out that the Republican Steering Committee had officially named him to be the Chair of the Committee in the 112th Congress. Lucas says that the GIPSA Rule is clearly contrary to the intent of the Congress and the legal system of this country.
We feature his comments from this appearance on today's Beef Buzz.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
