Monsanto Touts Precision Ag- Saying It Will Allow Farmers to Produce More, Conserve More and Remain Profitable

Monsanto is implementing a program this year in the Midwest to deliver IntelliScanSM field guides and IntelliSeedSM custom planting recommendations to farmers. This is the first phase of Monsanto Prescriptive Ag Solutions, a program with the vision of providing growers increased confidence in seed choice and the best placement and plant populations for their farm.
"Today, farmers are looking for advances in seed technologies and precision planting practices that will enable them to produce more, conserve more and remain profitable," said Julie LaBonte, Monsanto Prescriptive Ag Business Manager. "These tools are Monsanto's next steps toward providing increased confidence in seed choice, placement and plant population for field-specific recommendations."
IntelliScan contains detailed field maps and data that provide the farmer with valuable insights into field-specific growing conditions. Using the IntelliScan field guide farmers are able to assess potential field stresses and match the right hybrids and varieties for specific field conditions, choose the right plant population customized to field environmental factors and conduct a post-season crop review of in-field variability for future corrective action.
Farmers in the pilot program are also receiving IntelliSeed custom planting recommendations that enhance the crop management decisions for the current year, as well as provide insight for future crop decisions. The program includes:
· Harvest Yield Maps, which help to enhance the crop management assessment and enable development to start for the following yield season's tactics through analysis of current harvest yield maps.
· Planning Maps, which contain specific hybrid and planting population recommendations based on unique field characteristics, including harvest yield data.
· Smart Data Cards, which are used in connection with farmer's variable-rate planter to execute custom seed planting recommendations.
IntelliScanSM and IntelliSeedSM are the first steps toward a complete Prescriptive Ag Solutions program that includes technologies and collaboration expertise from industry leaders aimed at more efficiently delivering information to a farmer in a more useful manner.
Yielding the most from every acre has taken on more importance as the need to increase food production to feed a growing global population estimated to be at 9 billion by mid-century intersects with the need to conserve more in the production of those crops.
"Monsanto is focused on helping farmers double their yield output in major crops by the year 2030," said LaBonte. "Along with our elite seed genetics and broad biotechnology traits pipeline, we believe Prescriptive Ag Solutions will help us attain that goal. Through initial work with John Deere, Raven and SST software Monsanto is developing precision ag tools that will more efficiently deliver information to the grower in a more useful manner, whether that is custom field guides or information sent directly to the equipment in the field. Industry collaboration is a necessity for progress and we're excited about the potential of this program."
