Canola Waiting on a Rain- Yield Potential Is Still Good for 2011

The latest Oklahoma Crop Weather update confirms what most folks out across Oklahoma already know too well- it's extremely dry in especially the western half of the state. According to Heath Sanders, Agronomist for PCOM, the 2011 winter canola crop is suffering- but probably is is better shape than the 2011 wheat crop.

The driest quadrant of the state is southwestern Oklahoma- and producers there are wondering how much wheat crop potential is left. In the case of canola, those same worries are there- but Sanders says that the canola plant is better adapted to respond to a rain this late in the process. Some of the stressed fields in the southern half of Oklahoma are at a point of starting to bloom, while fields further north are not yet at that point.

We talked with Heath Sanders about the condition of the Winter Canola crop statewide as of Monday afternoon, March 21. You can see and hear our conversation with Heath by clicking on the "PLAY" button on the video box below.

Canola TV is a service of PCOM, who will have local delivery points in most counties where canola is being grown in 2011. You can visit their website by clicking here- this is where you can always check the latest cash canola prices available from them as well.
