Fri, 18 Mar 2011 7:43:51 CDT

Cheryl Hyde of Lexington Named Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year Ag in the Classroom has announced their 2011 Teacher of the Year. Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom coordinator Dana Bessinger says that "we have many great teachers across this state, but Cheryl Hyde of Lexington has the distinction of being this year's Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year." Cheryl Hyde teaches 2nd grade at Lexington Elementary. She has taught for 11 years. She is a National Board Certified Teacher. She had been Lexington Elementary Teacher of the Year and has received grants from AITC and Lowes.

Mrs. Hyde incorporates AITC through out her curriculum during the entire year. She uses her smartboard to teach AITC Language Arts lessons. Her goal is to teach one AITC lesson per week. She has personal experience with Agriculture. Her family raises beef cattle, grains, and harvests pecans. They raise field corn, rye, wheat, and sorghum for feed or silage. She brings those various crops into her classroom to give her students hands-on experience with them. They make Bread in a Bag and Butter, ice Cream from the milk that comes from her family's dairy farm. She gets local commodity groups to come to her school and give the students hands-on experience milking a cow.

Bessinger adds that Hyde's family also has been a teaching resource in her classroom. Her son is a 4-H member and he comes to her classroom and helps teach many AITC lessons like, History of Branding, Making Biodegradable Packaging, and Dying Cotton. She incorporates a school wide Ag Day every year. She also started a school garden for the entire school to use. Her second grade students leave her classroom knowing the definition of Agriculture and can identify many of the concepts that go along with it.
