Do the Math- Lighter Weight Cattle Being Sold Out of Feedlots Means Fewer Pounds of Beef Per Animal

Despite the uncertainty in the futures markets thus far this week because of the failure of the Japanese government to contain radiation from seeping into the atmosphere from the damaged nuclear reactors in northeastern Japan- cash cattle prospects still appear to be fairly good as they may fly in the face of the limit down performance by Live Cattle futures on Tuesday.
On this Beef Buzz, Livestock economist Darrell Mark of the University of Nebraska analyzes the record-setting cattle prices in last week's trade, driven by positive developments on both the supply and demand sides. Dr. Mark believes that feedlots have sold well ahead of just being current this past week as they have few if any cattle that are fully market ready this week. The rush to sell- especially this past week when we saw cash cattle trade at $118 has meant lighter weight cattle being bought- which translates into fewer pounds of beef per animal.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
