Longtime agriculture advocate Terry Detrick has been named a 2011 DASNR Champion by Oklahoma State University's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
"This award is one that I will cherish; my only wish is that I could divide it in pieces to share with all the people who have enabled me to be involved and who assisted along the way," said Detrick, who with his son Brad operates a 2,800-acre diversified farm and ranch operation in the Ames, Drummond and Lahoma communities.
The DASNR Champion Award recognizes and honors those who are not graduates of OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources but who have brought distinction to the division while demonstrating a continuing interest in and commitment for agricultural sciences and natural resources.
The division is comprised of the college and two state agencies: the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station system and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
"Terry has worked tirelessly to support agriculture and rural America at the state, regional and national levels," said Robert E. Whitson, DASNR vice president, dean and director. "He has engaged in numerous economic development projects throughout our state and has actively promoted alternative agricultural enterprises such as renewable energy crops."
A graduate of Phillips University in Enid, Detrick earned his bachelor's degree in business and education. He began his career in public education at Drummond, teaching in the classroom for five years before serving in administration for six additional years. He became an agent for Oklahoma Farmers Union in 1978. Detrick was first elected to the organization's board of directors in 1986 and eventually served as vice president from 1988 to 1992.
Detrick then served as chair of the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association and president of the National Association of Wheat Growers before returning to Farmers Union in 1998 as vice president and director of coop programs. He served in that position until assuming his current post as president of the organization, now called American Farmers and Ranchers, in February 2009.
His professional affiliations include service as president, Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation; chairman, Oklahoma Ag Mediation Program Advisory Council; chairman, Alternative Dispute Resolution Advisory Council; and on the board of directors for National Farmers Union, The Oklahoma Academy, Oklahoma Rural Development Council and Rural Oklahoma Capital Alliance, among others.
In 2005, Detrick was appointed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the Federal Cattlemen's Beef Board, which provides oversight of Beef Check-off dollars. A year earlier, he was appointed to the National Animal Identification Beef Working Group to develop a national trace-back system for animal health surveillance.
Detrick was named "Mr. Wheat" by the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association in 2000. The "Mr. Wheat" award honors an individual within the wheat industry who has made a positive impact on the business in the state and has improved the Oklahoma wheat industry because of that impact.
A longtime supporter of Oklahoma youth and the FFA, Detrick has received the prestigious Honorary Chapter, Honorary State and Honorary American FFA degrees.
"As a member of DASNR's dean's advisory council, Terry has provided valuable insights about Oklahoma issues and helped ensure that OSU is achieving its land-grant mission of improving the quality of life for state residents," Whitson said.
