US Cattlemen's Association Praises Proposed Changes in Beef Board Structure

Thu, 31 Mar 2011 12:38:23 CDT

US Cattlemen's Association Praises Proposed Changes in Beef Board Structure On Monday evening, March 28th, the Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) Executive Committee voted to accept the recommendations of the Roles and Responsibilities Committee, which has been charged with reviewing the CBB's policies and procedures to ensure the CBB is fulfilling its responsibilities under the Beef Promotion and Research Act and Order as well as the expectations of the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. The Roles and Responsibilities Committee, which was formed in 2010, had already submitted its report to the 2010 CBB Executive Committee and the Executive Committee had already approved the recommendations; but when the committee's recommendations were forwarded to the Cattlemen's Beef Board in July of 2010 for consideration, the CBB was not asked to take action on the recommendations.

US Cattlemen's Association (USCA) applauds the efforts of the CBB in revisiting this issue and moving forward with a plan to make the Beef Checkoff more inclusive for all cattle producers. The CBB Executive Committee is submitting a revised set of recommendations for the entire CBB's approval. In February and March 2011, CBB's Executive Committee updated the Roles and Responsibilities Committee's report to reflect recent changes to the CBB's guidelines, policies and procedures. Also prepared was a revised set of recommendations which the Executive Committee approved Monday evening and has now been submitted to the entire CBB for approval.

The organization's website has a summary of the changes the Executive Committee has recommended with the intent of ensuring that the CBB is properly discharging its responsibilities. The recommendations are presented in relation to the CBB's responsibilities as specified by USDA/AMS and only those responsibilities for which changes are recommended are included in the summary. USCA's website includes a complete listing of the 20 CBB responsibilities and the eleven recommended changes. Click here to see this summary from the USCA that they obtained from the CBB.

If these recommendations are approved by the entire CBB, the Beef Check-Off will become more inclusive for all cattle industry groups and producers. The recommendations will bring more ideas and discussion into the planning and implementation process. These changes will ensure that Check-off dollars are spent efficiently and effectively; we believe these changes will build more support for the Beef Check-off. The United States Cattlemen's Association feels cattle producers need to continue to position beef, both domestically and internationally, as the protein of choice so that cattlemen can continue to enjoy the demand that is responsible for the prices we are receiving in today's markets. Please contact your Beef Board Representatives and urge them to vote for the Roles and Responsibilities Recommendations.
