Extreme Fire Danger Forecast for Sunday

Sat, 02 Apr 2011 22:25:38 CDT

Extreme Fire Danger Forecast for Sunday Oklahoma Forestry Services wants the public to be aware of the continued high fire danger on Sunday.

Conditions today are much drier than was predicted, and without significant humidity recovery fires may start earlier in the day and grow quickly. Caution should be taken with any outdoor activity that could spark a wildfire. Under these conditions sparks can ignite easily and fires will spread quickly. All outdoor burning is discouraged.

"Currently OFS is coordinating aircraft on two large fires in northeast Oklahoma," said George Geissler, Oklahoma State Forester. "We will continue to coordinate state and federal firefighting resources as needed on fire outbreaks across the state."

Sunday's forecast calls for 20-30 m.p.h. sustained winds, with gusts over 40 m.p.h. as a dry line moves into the state, bringing high temperatures and low single-digit humidity. Conditions on Sunday will be even more extreme due to the very low humidity that we have experienced over the past several days.

There are currently 34 counties under a burn ban across the state- Click here for a full list of those counties as found on the Oklahoma Department of Ag website.
