When Will the Japanese Demand More Source Verification for US Beef?
Thu, 28 Apr 2011 21:34:50 CDT
Food Safety concerns have always been a part of the mindset of the Japanese consumer- and now with nuclear radiation worries- food safety concerns have jumped to a whole new level. The President and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation, Phil Seng, talked with reporters about the status of the Japanese market for US beef- and one reporter asked Phil if the the latest food safety worries might actually fire up the Japanese to demand even more traceability for their imported food- including US Beef.
Phil Seng's answer is our featured audio on today's Beef Buzz. He told us that the certification of beef from younger animals is all the Japanese have asked of us to this point- but as they get more and more food from other countries with extensive traceback information (he cited South Korea as one example), that could lay the groundwork for them to ask more of us.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
