Wed, 25 May 2011 15:29:00 CDT
The U.S. Meat Export Federation held a press conference today to address the issues in the current trade markets for beef and pork. The conference included many senior staff members and board members from USMEF and representatives with knowledge on the trade markets in Mexico, Central America, Dominican Republic, South Korea, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.
Phil Seng, President and CEO of USMEF, gave brief comments on the current trade markets and a global overview of the current situation. The markets had a very good start to the year these last three months, said Seng.
The beef market is up 32% in volume and the number of exports in Japan is up 75%. Tawain is down currently about 20%, while the Eurpean Union quota will be met this year by the U.S., which Seng said is "very encouraging right now." The pork exports overall are up about 20% also.
Seng also said they are continuing to work with China and are in hopes to resolve issues with them, including labeling.
