Supplementing feed for summer can be economical
Thu, 26 May 2011 13:56:08 CDT
The decision to supplement during the summer months is a dilemma many ranchers have been facing. In today's Beef Buzz, we talk to Dale Blasi, Kansas State Extension beef cattle specialist, about the positive affects supplementing stocker cattle can have. Supplementing feed can be a good economic move for many ranchers where grass resources are limited.
Blasi says this type of approach to stocker cattle can have merit. Blasi also says supplemented cattle, which were significantly heavier, were in the feedyard 20 days less than the unsupplemented cattle.
The decision to supplement stocker cattle can pay off in the long run, even if you do not supplement everyday. Blasi says significant results were still found after supplementing the cattle every other day or even every two days.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
