Officers of the Cattlemen's Beef Board and the National Cattlemens Beef Association Meet in Denver

Mon, 09 May 2011 7:34:51 CDT

The officers and leadership representing the Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) met in Denver, May 3-4. Attending the meeting were NCBA Officers Bill Donald, president; J.D. Alexander, president-elect; Scott George, vice president; Steve Foglesong, immediate past president; and David Dick, chairman of the Federation of State Beef Councils. The CBB officers attending the meeting were Tom Jones, chairman; Wesley Grau, vice-chair; Weldon Wynn, treasurer; Dan Dierschke, immediate past chair; and Ted Greidanus, executive committee member. Lance Woodbury of Garden City, Kansas, facilitated the meeting.

The meeting included discussion about the organizations' commitment to each other and their future working relationship. The two organizations agreed on the following items:

We recognize CBB administers the checkoff and NCBA is a checkoff contractor.

We work in partnership to increase the profitability of the industry. Program staff is doing great work on excellent programs. Their work is fully supported by both volunteer leadership and staff, and NCBA will continue to be a checkoff contractor.

NCBA, as a part of the beef industry but representing all segments, will continue working to make all beef industry participants feel welcome at the industry meetings.

There are improvements that need to be made in the relationship of our Chief Executive Officers and staff, and it is the commitment of the officers of both organizations that the working relationship will be improved.

CBB and NCBA agree to work together to develop a clearer understanding of the expectations and consequences related to the compliance process. As part of this effort, CBB will review contractor acknowledgement.

NCBA will provide written input to CBB related to CBB's Roles and Responsibilities initiative. After the CBB Board takes action, a new Joint Industry Advisory Committee Coordination Agreement will be developed.

Work will continue under the prior joint agreement until a new agreement is reached.

"We were able to have a constructive dialogue and find common ground," said Tom Jones, a third-generation farmer and rancher in Pottsville, Ark. "At this time, we have not scheduled additional meetings with the NCBA leadership, but we will be open to additional meetings prior to summer conference in Orlando."

"We are committed to our partnership with the Cattlemen's Beef Board," said Donald. "The partnership has resulted in the effective and efficient use of checkoff resources to conduct demand building programs which have produced significant results for every cattleman and beef producer that pays the checkoff."
Donald said the leadership of both organizations will work together to determine the next steps to build on the agreements reached at the meeting in Denver.
