OSU's Dr. Kim Anderson Talks Canola and Wheat Prices- and we have your SUNUP Preview

Fri, 24 Jun 2011 07:19:21 CDT

OSU's Dr. Kim Anderson Talks Canola and Wheat Prices- and we have your SUNUP Preview Grain Marketing Extension Economist from Oklahoma State University, Dr. Kim Anderson, with most of canola harvest being completed, says canola prices are relatively good right now for Oklahoma at $12.00 per bushel, falling only slightly from $12.50 from June 30. Wheat prices have taken a hit over the past couple of weeks, falling to around $7.30 per bushel.

However, Anderson says this is still a relatively good wheat price. The value of the wheat crop looks better than expected with a predicted $585 million crop for Oklahoma this year, which is just five percent less than the value of much larger 2010 crop. Anderson's suggestion to producers is to follow their plan concerning storage or selling and do not second guess the market.

You can see the rest of Kim and Dave Deken's interview on the current canola and wheat prices- that can be seen on Saturday morning on OETA- or you can hear the conversation now by clicking on the LISTEN Bar that is below now.

Besides Dr. Anderson, also this week on SUNUP, we take you to canola harvest in Grant County and talk with producer Jeff Scott, who's been growing canola for eight years. Plus, Josh Bushong gives an overview of this year's crop quality, yields and insect problems. And, a reminder about the upcoming 7th Annual Winter Canola Conference.

In the Mesonet report, Al Sutherland and Gary McManus show how the drought is expanding into eastern Oklahoma and how recent rains compare to the percentage of normal rainfall.

In Cow-Calf Corner, Glenn Selk talks about the importance of maintaining mineral feeders.

In Naturally Speaking, Dwayne Elmore looks at how controlling water levels can influence aquatic plants in farm ponds.
