Fri, 01 Jul 2011 13:59:05 CDT
The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry recently held a hearing regarding the State of Livestock in America on June 28. From the beginning, Republicans pushed administration regarding the issue of the GIPSA rule. Top Republican Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas, began the opening statements by saying the livestock industry has been under regulatory attack by both the EPA and the Department of Agriculture.
Senator Roberts also questioned the USDA's impartiality on the issue of the GIPSA rule. Dr. Joe Glauber, Chief Economist for the USDA, who is responsible for the comprehensive cost of benefits analysis of the livestock and poultry marketing reforms proposed by GIPSA, gave no indication of how much longer his office maybe taking in putting together this cost benefiting anaylsis.
Every Republican member in attendance brought up and discussed the issue of the GIPSA rule. Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow also commented on the issue saying she will continue watching and working with the USDA to find a workable solution that does not hinder economic development and innovation.
