Oklahoma Brothers Hoping to Win National Contest with Family Farming Operation
Thu, 29 Sep 2011 14:45:43 CDT
Fifth generation farmers Mason and Madison Bolay of Perry, Okla., are carrying on the family tradition of farming, while incorporating new technology and equipment through the use of precision agriculture. One way Mason and Madison are trying to manage this is through a contest sponsored by Dell Computers, Microsoft and MasterCard to find America's Favorite Small Business.
The Bolay brothers entered the contest to expand their farm operation, which is mostly made up of small grain crops on rotation, like wheat, soybeans, milo and corn, and a small, commercial cow-calf herd. While Mason says the new technology they use on the farm, such as GPS and auto-steer, are like "toys" to them, they are also beneficial and useful tools which help them provide a quality product to consumers.
Madison says they entered the contest for America's Favorite Small Business in hopes to not only win the title, but also to purchase a yield monitor with their winnings. As Bolay Farms begins using more variable rate technology, the yield monitor will be useful in recording the exact amount of fertilizer and the exact amount of seed to an acre.
Mason and Madison entered the contest along with 200 other entries and are the only entry representing farming and the agricultural industry. Winners of the contest receive $25,000 worth of Dell computer equipment that is pre-programmed with Microsoft software and a $75,000 prepaid MasterCard.
The competition has now been turned over to America to decide who they think should be named America's Favorite Small Business. Voting has already started and continues through Oct. 9, with the winner to be announced on Oct. 10. You can vote daily - click here to go submit your vote!
