Wed, 23 Nov 2011 14:40:14 CST
This week on SUNUP, our special report on Oklahoma wheat called 'Quality Matters.'
First, Jeff Edwards discusses quality improvement, yields, protein, seed selection and soil composition. He's followed by Joe Armstrong, who looks at wheat competition from weeds and the importance of addressing weeds early in the growing season.
We travel to the Port of Catoosa for a behind-the-scenes visit at Gavilon Grain to learn how elevators grade wheat and what managers need in terms of protein and quality to market Oklahoma wheat overseas.
Next, it's on to Shawnee Milling Company for discussions with Bill and Joe Ford about the milling process and the quality and types of wheat their company requires to produce consistent baking products.
Food Network judge and Tulsa resident Kerry Vincent talks about the importance of wheat quality to the cake artistry industry. We also talk with the FAPC milling and baking specialist Renee Nelson and Adeliade Roy, a student in Nelson's Fundamentals of Food Science class.
Finally, we wrap up with an overall perspective on quality, prices and marketing with Kim Anderson.
Catch SUNUP on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. on OETA.
