Retained Ownership Improving Premiums, Genetics and Management
Tue, 15 Nov 2011 11:26:29 CST
The process of retained ownership gives many cow-calf producers the chance to learn more about their cattle, while still receiving premiums for the investments made in genetics and management. In an Iowa tri-county steer carcass futurity, their data over 10 years on 76,000 head of cattle shows producers that retained ownership on feed made money every year but one.
Oklahoma cattlemen Jimmy Taylor says producers that retain ownership can not only reap monetary benefits but also gain valuable feedback. Taylor says he would receive the end results and he started to discover that there were a lot more factors that went into getting a good quality carcass. Taylor studied each of these and has become a much better manager because of it.
Taylor orginially became interested in the retained ownership because he wanted to increase the value he was getting for each calf.
